Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - David Mixon, Ryan Shaver, and Rafael Cova of the San Jose Giants combined to throw a no-hittter and earn the series sweep with a 3-0 win in the 66ers last home game of the season Thursday.
David Mixon (3-1, 3.29), making only his second start of the season, got the ball rolling by retiring the first 17 batters he faced prior to walking Jessie Mier in the sixth. Mixon struck out 10 Sixers through 6 innings for the win.
Ryan Shaver replaced Mixon in the seventh and put himself into some hot water. After Elian Herrera flied weakly to center, Scott Van Slyke walked, Andres Perez was hit by a pitch, and Steven Caseres walked to load the bases with one out. Shaver was then able to get Preston Mattingly to ground one to the shortstop, Brian Bocock, who turned a double play to kill the rally.
Miguel Sanfler pitched well in his second spot start, hurling 4 scoreless innings in which he allowed 3 hits and 1 walk.
San Jose (90-46) put a two-spot up on the board against Eric Krebs in the fifth when Brian Bocock launched his third homer of the year with C.J. Ziegler on base.
The Giants added another run in the sixth on an RBI double to right by Nestor Rojas, plating Thomas Neal from second to make it 3-0.
Rafael Cova came in to lock things down in the ninth. Cova walked Van Slyke with two outs, but struck out Andres Perez swinging to end the game and preserve the eighth no-hitter in San Jose history.
Krebs (0-1, 3.04) gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk while fanning 1 in 2/3 of an inning for the loss.
The no-hit performance is the first in the California League since Marlon Arias tossed his for the 66ers against Bakersfield on May 9, 2007.
It is also the first combined no-hitter since Patrick Green and Jarod Plummer of High Desert teamed up to do so against Inland Empire August 21, 2006.
Including tonight, the last three no-hitters in the California League have all happened in San Bernardino.
Inland Empire (57-79) drops to four games behind Rancho Cucamonga with four games to play for the last playoff spot with the Quakes beating Visalia 6-2.
The 66ers wrap up the remaining four games of the season on the road against the Lancaster JetHawks beginning Friday. RHP Josh Wall (4-8, 5.91) gets the nod against LHP Chris Salamida (4-2, 6.49) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
