Inland Empire 66ers News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - A night after being held hitless, the 66ers recorded a dozen hits and held on for a 6-5 win over the JetHawks in the series opener at Clear Channel Stadium Friday.

With a one-run lead in the ninth inning, Marcel Prado returned to the mound to close things out. Jon Gaston singled with one out before Prado hit Koby Clemens with a pitch to put the winning run aboard. With Matt Weston at the plate, Prado induced a come-backer that he turned into a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

The 66ers grabbed a first inning lead as Elian Herrera singled, stole second and third base and scored on Clemens' errant throw to third. Van Slyke drew a walk and eventually scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.

The JetHawks had pulled even by the fourth before Inland Empire figured out Lancaster starter Chris Salamida. After a pair of singles, Christian Lara hit a three-run homer to right field to stake the 66ers a 5-2 lead.

Alex Garabedian manufactured the crucial sixth run for the 66ers in the sixth. After a base hit, he stole his first base of the season, took third on a grounder, and scored on a wild pitch from Lancaster reliever Ashton Mowdy.

Josh Wall (5-8) picked up his third win in a row with another strong effort. He yielded 5 runs (although two scored after his exit in the sixth) on 8 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He didn't walk anyone and finished one shy of a season-high with 8 strikeouts.

Joe Torres allowed a pair of singles after replacing Wall as the JetHawks pulled within a run, but stranded the bases loaded when he coaxed a ground out from Weston to end the seventh.

Jaime Ortiz had his first 3-hit game of the season to lead a rejuvenated 66ers offense. Jovanny Rosario, Elian Herrera, Garabedian and Lara each added two hits.

J.B. Shuck and Andy Simunic each had three hits for Lancaster.

Salamida (4-3) gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Steven Caseres walked to load the bases with one out. Shaver was then able to get Preston Mattingly to ground one to the shortstop, Brian Bocock, who turned a double play to kill the rally.

Inland Empire (58-79) pulls within three games of Rancho Cucamonga with three games to play with the Quakes falling to Bakersfield, 15-9.

The 66ers and JetHawks square off again Saturday at 7 p.m. Radio coverage on KCAA 1050AM begins at 6:55 p.m.
