Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA - Inland Empire is reactivating Top-10 Angels Prospect Nick Maronde from the Disabled List. After winning a California League Pitcher of the Week Award, Maronde was placed on the Disabled List with a lat strain on May 7th. Also joining the 66ers is catcher Carlos Lugo who will be making his first appearance above Low-A of his career. To make room, Inland Empire has placed Jett Bandy on the DL with a left knee contusion and the Angels have released relief pitcher Kevin Nabors.
Nick Maronde started the season on fire, consistently keeping the 66ers in games by averaging nearly six strikeouts per start, and holding opposing hitters to a .217 batting average against him. He was named California League Pitcher of the Week for the final week of April after a seven shutout inning performance against the top offense on the circuit (High Desert), in which he struck out 12 batters. The third round pick out of the University of Florida from the 2011 draft was rated the Angels 10th best prospect by Baseball America to start the season.
Carlos Lugo is entering his second season stateside as a member of the Angels farm system. In four years in the Dominican Summer League Lugo had two home runs and 33 RBI in 132 games. He will help carry the load as Jett Bandy recovers from a left knee contusion suffered July 6th when he fouled a ball off his knee. Bandy was just starting to catch fire at the plate, hitting .385 with six RBI in his last eight games.
Kevin Nabors has been released after five years in the Angels system. The right hander's devastating curveball helped him record 72 strikeouts in 68 innings for the 66ers, but unfortunately inconsistency kept him from keeping his ERA down. He leaves the Angels system with a lifetime 4.62 ERA.
Inland Empire has a three game series against the Visalia Rawhide this weekend. The team will be back again next weekend with a pair of great giveaways. Saturday, July 14th, the 66ers will distribute a "Welcome Home" doormat, and then Sunday, July 15th, San Bernardino Recycle presents an Angels Water Bottle featuring Angels Ace Jered Weaver. Tickets can be purchased at the 66ers box office and online at www.66ers.com. For more information on the Inland Empire 66ers please contact Sam Farber, Director of Broadcasting, at 909-495-7632.
