Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
In a "win or go home" scenario, the Brazos Valley Bombers hosted the Victoria Generals on Fan Appreciation Night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark. Bomber fans from across the Brazos Valley packed the ballpark as they were treated to free admission courtesy of TwinCityProperties.com. Although the contest remained close through most of the game, the Bomber offense showed they were too much for the Generals to handle, taking home the victory 7-3. The win puts the Bombers in a tie with the Generals for the final slot in the Texas Collegiate League playoff picture, with the decisive ballgame coming tomorrow night.
The Bombers scored early off of the Generals' starter Ethan Carnes, as Texas A&M first baseman Jacob House executed a perfect hit-and-run to score fellow Aggie Scott Arthur on a line-drive base hit to left field in the bottom of the first inning. That just started what would turn out to be a very good day for the Texas A&M duo.
Jameson Holt started on the hill for the Bombers and gave up a leadoff General double to start the game, but wiggled out of the frame without allowing an opposing run to cross the plate. The southpaw cruised through the next five innings, giving up only one hit while striking out three, but ran into some trouble in the seventh. Victoria posted three runs, which included a solo homerun and two more runs on defensive miscues.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bombers answered back with a run of their own to tie the game at three runs-a-piece as the game went into the final two innings. Bombers' relief pitcher Geoff Lomax tossed a perfect 8th, which allowed the offense to take center stage in the bottom of the frame. With runners on the corners, left fielder Herb Romero laid down a perfect bunt that allowed catcher John Cannon to tally the go-ahead run. The scoring did not end there however; House and shortstop Christian Soberanes both knocked in a run as the Bomber offense distanced themselves, setting the table for closer Garrett Shepperd to shut the door.
Catcher John Cannon cashed in a notable performance, going 2-for-2 at the dish with an RBI and run scored, and leftfielder Trey Porras collected a run scored while going 1-for-3.
Come out tomorrow evening for the regular season finale at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark as the Bombers play host to the Victoria Generals. The winner of Thursday's game will clinch the final seed in the 2011 playoffs and a first round date to host the East Texas Pump Jacks on Friday. Tomorrow night's game is Candy 95 Night, with a DJ Alli, of the Candy 95 Morning Show, bobblehead giveaway. It's also Thirsty Thursday, where all ballpark drinks are only $1 all night long.
