Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks wasted little time Saturday, taking the lead just 20 seconds after the opening faceoff and sliding to a 4-2 victory at Young Arena against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

The play leading to the early goal started from behind the net. Vince Hinostroza fed the puck to Scott MacDonald who pushed it through the pads of goalie Matt Morris. It was the only score in the frame.

Waterloo added another quick goal early in the second. At 1:59, Mark Naclerio's shot went first through the skates of defenseman Kyle McKenzie, then past Morris to make the score 2-0. Dubuque got the goal back when a clearing attempt caromed off an official to Cody Bradley, who lifted a wrister in from the high slot at 9:33.

Tyler Zepeda notched the eventual game-winner at 7:18 of the third period, sending a backhander under the crossbar after a rink-wide feed from MacDonald. With just over seven minutes to play, Bradley crept behind the Hawks' defense for a power play scoring rush to tighten the margin back to one. However, after having three tries for the empty net denied in the closing minute, Max Edson sealed the win by flipping in a shot with 13.5 seconds showing on the game clock.

Jay Williams earned his eleventh win of the season with 16 saves, while Morris suffered the loss in spite of 24 stops.

The Hawks meet another Cowbell Cup rival next Friday when they visit the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. The following night, Waterloo returns home for their next game at Young Arena, hosting the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05. Tickets are available for the contest from waterlooblackhawks.com. The Black Hawks Box Office will open at 11:30AM Wednesday.
