August 26, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

The MLS All-Stars defeated the LIGA MX All-Stars in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the 2021 MLS All-Star Game at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening.

2021 MLS ALL-STAR GAME presented by TARGET - GAME NOTES

MLS ALL-STARS 1 [Murillo (Atuesta) 53]

LIGA MX ALL-STARS 1 [Rodríguez (Sánchez) 20]

MLS All-Stars win on penalty kicks, 3-2

HT: 0-1 ATT: 22,118 (sellout)

MLS is now 8-5-4 vs. international opposition in the MLS All-Star Game. This was the second time facing a team from Mexico (previously: 3-1 vs. CD Guadalajara in 2003, in Carson, Calif.)

Matt Turner of the New England Revolution was named the MLS All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, after making two saves during the penalty shootout. He is the second goalkeeper to be named MVP of an MLS All-Star Game, and the first for the MLS team (only previous: Tim Howard, Everton FC, 2009).

This was the fourth time the MLS All-Star Game was decided in a penalty kick shootout - and the first victory for the MLS team (previously going down to Juventus FC [2018], CF Real Madrid [2017] and Everton FC [2009]).

Jesús Murillo of Los Angeles Football Club scored the MLS All-Stars goal in the 53rd minute, heading home a corner kick from LAFC teammate Eduard Atuesta. Murillo is the fourth MLS All-Star to score in the MLS All-Star Game before his home crowd vs. as international opponent (also: Josef Martínez, Atlanta, 2018; Brian Ching, Houston, 2010; Carlos Ruiz, LA Galaxy, 2003).

The six MLS All-Stars from Seattle Sounders FC were all in the starting lineup - defenders Nouhou and Yeimar Gómez Andrade, midfielder Alex and Cristian Roldan and João Paulo and forward Raúl Ruidíaz. The six for one team matched the All-Star Game record in a match vs. a foreign opponent, first set in 2006 when D.C. United had six starters for the match vs. Chelsea FC in Bridgeview, Ill.

The Roldan brothers (Alex and Cristian) became the first set of brothers in MLS to appear in the same MLS All-Star Game. Fabio and Rafael both played for Manchester United FC in the 2010 MLS All-Star Game. The dos Santos brothers were both named All-Stars, but did not appear in the same game (Giovani in 2016, 2017; Jonathan in 2018, 2019).

Cade Cowell of the San Jose Earthquakes became the fifth-youngest player to appear for the MLS All-Stars, aged 17 years, 315 days. Ricardo Pepi of FC Dallas became the sixth-youngest to appear for the MLS, aged 18 years, 228 days.

The match attracted a sellout crowd of 22,118 to Banc of California Stadium.
