Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, IL (April 8, 2013) - The Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) have announced their final roster ahead of the season opener on April 14th 2013 against Seattle Reign FC.
The Red Stars cultivated their roster via League allocation, free agency, and the 2013 NWSL college and supplemental drafts. Each team was also given the option to sign two additional international players.
The NWSL business model incorporates U.S. Soccer, the Canadian Soccer Association, and Mexican Football Federations, whose players were allocated among the eight NWSL. The Chicago Red Stars were allocated US Women's National Team Gold Medalists Shannon Boxx and Amy LePeilbet, Canadian National Team Bronze Medalists Carmelina Moscato and Erin McLeod, and Mexican National Team players Dinora Garza and Maribel Dominguez.
Lori Chalupny, Taryn Hemmings, Ella Masar, Jessica McDonald, and Leslie Osborne serve as the Red Stars Free Agent signings. Notably, the team was given an extra Free Agent due to the fact Amy LePeilbet will miss the league season after having reconstructive knee surgery in February.
College draftees Zakiya Bywaters (UCLA), Rachel Quon (Stanford) and Taylor Vancil (Florida State) were selected in the inaugural 2013 NWSL College Draft. Not listed on the current roster is Jen Hoy, who attended preseason camp but is set to finish her senior year at Princeton before re-joining the team in June.
The Red Stars received the first pick in the 2013 NWSL Supplemental Draft, and selected US Women's National Team Gold Medalist Lindsay Tarpley, who is continuing rehab on a previous knee injury and is expected to join the team in the coming months. Other Supplemental Draft signings include Lauren Fowlkes, Alyssa Mautz, Jackie Santacaterina, and Michelle Wenino.
Also not listed on the current roster are German players Sonja Fuss and Inka Grings, who will join the team in late May.
