(Reading, PA) - The Philadelphia Phillies Winter Tour will make its annual stop in Reading, home of the Phillies Double-A affiliate since 1967, on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at The Crowne Plaza Reading Hotel. The dinner will also serve as the 8th annual King of Baseballtown fundraiser.
As in previous years, Philadelphia Phillies players and staff members will be on hand to speak to the crowd. Featured Philadelphia Phillies players and staff will be announced at a later date. Prizes, highlight videos and more are also part of the evening. Cocktail hour begins at 5:30 PM and dinner will be served at 6:30 PM.
Tickets for the banquet are $65 each or $600 for a 10-person table and are available online at readingphillies.com, at FirstEnergy Stadium or by phone (610-375-8469). Proceeds benefit the Reading Phillies Baseballtown Charities, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping more children, who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity, play baseball. At last year's event, Philadelphia Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel, who led the Phillies to their first World Series win since 1980, and relievers Ryan Madson (2002 R-Phil) and Scott Eyre, were just a few of the names in attendance. The evening's emcee was the late Harry Kalas and the night was also highlighted by the World Series trophy.
The Reading Phillies trademarked the name Baseballtown in 2002 and began programs in its name with goals to honor Reading's rich baseball history and secure its baseball future by giving more kids the opportunity to play and learn from the game's life lessons.
In 2006 Baseballtown Charities realized a dream that accomplished both of its goals when Gordon Hoodak Stadium at Lauer's Park opened in Reading. The $850,000 youth ballpark is located behind Lauer's Park Elementary School, which was named for the former stadium that housed several professional teams and hosted barnstorming tours from 1907-1941. Babe Ruth and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson both played there. Gordon Hoodak Stadium is the home field of the Olivet Boys and Girls Club's RBI leagues (Revitalizing Baseball in the Inner City). Gordon Hoodak is the principal of Lauer's Park Elementary School. According to olivetbgc.org, of the Olivet Boys and Girls Club's 5,800+ members, 84% come from families that live at or below the national poverty line.
