DENVER - The Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) have announced their schedule and Pre-Season Active Roster (PSAR) for the 2009 season. Highlighting the home schedule are three Eastern franchises that have never traveled to Colorado, including the Long Island Lizards, the Boston Cannons and a new, yet un-named Toronto team. Complimenting the new schedule is the return of the Outlaws' popular Fourth of July fireworks game and the 2009 Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game. Other home opponents include the Chicago Machine and the Washington Bayhawks.
The Outlaws' 12-game season will kick off at home on Saturday, May 16 against rival Chicago Machine. Nearly three months later Denver will wrap up its season on the road against Toronto on Saturday, August 8. MLL Championship Weekend will take place two weeks after the season finale on August 22 and 23 (Saturday and Sunday respectively) in Annapolis, Maryland at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. All Outlaws home games are played at INVESCO Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos NFL team.
The 2009 PSAR provides the Outlaws with the rights to several well-known players, including midfielder Kyle Harrison and defenseman Eric Martin. Harrison, a three-time All-American with Johns Hopkins University, won the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy with the Blue Jays after leading the squad to their 43rd NCAA title. Martin, a Salisbury State University grad and former Division III Player of the Year (2004), comes from the San Francisco Dragons where he was a co-captain and 2008 MLL All-Star. Other 2008 All-Stars that are new to the roster include defenseman Brett Hughes and midfielder Greg Downing.
Teams must trim their rosters to a 23-man squad by the conclusion of training camp (May 10, 2009). Each of the teams will now also be able to dress 19 players on game day, as opposed to the 18-man rule previously used.
Outlaws home games will feature a variety of seating options, from family-friendly priced seating to the "Corral" - a western-themed section on the east sideline where fans can experience the Outlaws hard-nosed approach to the game up-close, on the field. Outlaws games will also feature a festival atmosphere with pre and post-game entertainment and events.
