2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Week Hits Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Monday, July 25) - The Crew will play one home game this week at Crew Stadium, hosting English Premier League club Fulham FC on Wednesday, July 27, at 7:00 p.m. in a closed match. The 2005 Sierra Mist All-Star Game also takes place this week at Crew Stadium on Saturday, July 30, at 3:30 p.m. when the MLS All-Stars face Fulham FC.

The Crew (6-10-3, 21 pts.) won twice last week, defeating the MetroStars 1-0 at home last Wednesday in Interim Head Coach Robert Warzycha's home debut, and knocking off the Wizards 2-0 at home last Saturday.

The Crew's game vs. Fulham on Wednesday can be heard on-line at TheCrew.com and MLSNet.com. Tickets to the closed session vs. Fulham will be available only to select Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game ticket purchasers. Tickets will not be made available to the general public. Crew Soccer Nation members who have already purchased Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game tickets were sent the Fulham closed practice match tickets with their MLS All-Star Game tickets. WSYX (ABC 6) TO TELEVISE SIERRA MIST MLS ALL-STAR PRE-GAME SHOW

Local ABC affiliate, WSYX, will broadcast a live, hour-long, local pre-game show leading up to the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game. The game, which will be played on July 30 at Columbus Crew Stadium at 3:30 p.m., will feature the best of MLS against Fulham FC of the English Premier League. The MLS All-Star Game pre-game special, presented by Sierra Mist, will be televised from 2:30-3:30 p.m. live and will lead into ABC's national broadcast of the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game. NewsCenter sports anchors Clay Hall and Anthony Rothman will host the show, along with Crew goalkeeper Jon Busch.

HEJDUK NAMED MLS ALL-STAR RESERVE AS COMPLETE MLS ROSTER IS SET

Frankie Hejduk of the Crew will join the MLS All-Stars as a reserve in the game against Fulham FC on Saturday. The MLS starters consist of: goalkeeper Matt Reis (New England Revolution); defenders Eddie Pope (Real Salt Lake), Greg Vanney (FC Dallas), and Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards); midfielders Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Clint Dempsey (New England Revolution), Ronnie O'Brien (FC Dallas), Amado Guevara (MetroStars), and Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution); and forwards Carlos Ruiz (FC Dallas) and Eddie Johnson (FC Dallas). Joining Hejduk on the bench are defender Chris Albright (Los Angeles Galaxy), midfielder Simo Valakari (FC Dallas), and forward Pat Noonan (New England Revolution). Rounding out the roster are commissioner's picks midfielder Christian Gomez (D.C. United) and forward Taylor Twellman (New England Revolution). FC Dallas head coach Colin Clarke will lead the MLS All-Stars.

FULHAM FC ANNOUNCES ROSTER TO FACE MLS ALL-STARS AT SIERRA MIST MLS ALL-STAR GAME

Fulham FC manager Chris Coleman announced his club's 20-man roster to face the MLS All-Stars at the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game on Saturday, July 30. The Fulham roster, featuring players from 13 different countries, is led by U.S. National Team players and former MLS All-Stars Brian McBride and Carlos Bocanegra. Among the other players on the roster are Holland Under-20 National Team star forward Collins John, English Premier League veteran forward Luis Boa Morte, England National Team defender Zat Knight, Canadian international Tomasz Radzinski and World Cup 2002 veteran Papa Bouba Diop, who scored a memorable game-winner against France in the opener of the Korea / Japan tournament. The club's new acquisitions on the trip include Czech goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny, Danish left back Niclas Jensen and Icelandic forward Heider Helguson. Fulham, one of the oldest clubs in world soccer dating back to 1879, is owned by Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed and makes its home in London's renowned Craven Cottage.

HEJDUK AND U.S. VICTORIOUS IN FINALS OF GOLD CUP ON PENALTY KICKS VS. PANAMA

The U.S. Men's National Team and Crew defender Frankie Hejduk have won the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the regional championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The U.S. defeated Panama in the finals on Sunday, July 24, at Giants Stadium, winning 3-1 on penalty kicks after 0-0 regulation and overtime. Hejduk started and played the full match. The U.S. downed Honduras 2-1 in the semifinals on July 21 by scoring two goals in the final six minutes of the match to rally from a 1-0 deficit. Hejduk came on as a sub in the 15th minute for an injured Eddie Pope. The U.S. downed Jamaica 3-1 in the quarterfinals on July 16. The U.S. opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Cuba on July 7, with Hejduk starting and playing the full 90 minutes. The U.S. continued group play against Canada on July 9, winning 2-0, but Hejduk did not play. The U.S. wrapped up group play with a 0-0 tie against Costa Rica on July 12, with Hejduk playing the full 90, but he also picked up his second yellow card of the tournament which caused him to miss the quarterfinal match vs. Jamaica.

CREW TO FACE FC DALLAS IN U.S. OPEN CUP ROUND OF 16 ON AUGUST 3 AT

OHIO STATE'S JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM

The Crew will face FC Dallas in the 2005 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, August 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Tickets for the match are $10 general admission and are still available. Tickets can be acquired at the Crew Stadium Box Office, at any area Ticketmaster outlet, via phone at 614-431-3600, or on line at TheCrew.com. A portion of the proceeds will go to both the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund and The Crew Soccer Foundation. Ohio State students with a valid BUCK-ID will be admitted free. A donation is welcome. FC Dallas advanced to the Round of 16 with a 3-1 overtime win on July 13 over the Wilmington Hammerheads (United Soccer Leagues Second Division). Possible Crew quarterfinal opponents for August 24 include D.C. United, the Richmond Kickers (USL1) or the Ocean City Barons (PDL). At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money. The U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
