Richmond Roosters News Release

The Roosters had many successes in the 2004 season, but more often then not, pitching was not one of them. However, with Roosters ace Matt Schweitzer returning as a player and pitching coach, the 2005 pitching personnel is beginning to take shape.

"I think with the guys we have coming back and Matt (Schweitzer) as our pitching coach, we will have a much better staff" said Roosters Field Manager Chris Mongiardo, "we are planning to add more pitching after Major League organizations finish spring training and cuts are made."

Here are some recent Roosters pitching transactions:

Jamie Gonzales will be back in orange and green this season. He made eight pitching appearances last season, including three starts. Jamie struggled at 0-3 and a 7.58 ERA, but has had success at the professional level. Gonzales was drafted in the 12th round by the Detroit Tigers in 2001 and has made stops at two class "A" clubs, Oneonta and West Michigan.

Jim Cartwright returns to the Roosters for a second season. He made five relief appearances in the 2004 season, posting 0-0 and a 12.46 ERA. Cartwright will be a member of the Frontier League for a third consecutive year. He split time in 2003 with Kalamazoo and Kenosha, pitching in 21 games and going 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA.

Bill Grinovics is a rookie addition to the Roosters. Grinovics finished his collegiate career at Camden County College in Camden, New Jersey with a team best 1.60 ERA. The junior college standout recorded 86 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 67 1/3 innings. Grinovics was named NJCAA Division III Regional Player of the Year (Region XIX).

Jason Pilkington has been traded to the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League for future considerations. He finished the season 7-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 21 appearances, ten as a starter. Pilkington was traded to the Roosters in mid-season from the Rockford RiverHawks.
