March 16, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
Two goals from Daylon Groulx was enough for the Attack to end the regular season with momentum heading into the playoffs, as they beat the Kitchener Rangers 4-2 at the Bayshore.
The regular season for the Owen Sound Attack came to an end tonight with a matchup against the Kitchener Rangers, the second of a home and home series. It also meant the end of the regular season careers for two Attack overagers, Trent Bourque and Zach Poirier. After a ceremony before puck drop honouring their dedication and contributions, it was time for hockey at the Bayshore.
Kitchener got on the board first after Joseph Garreffa got free for a breakaway then found the back of the net. The Attack would respond minutes later on the power play when Barret Kirwin tipped in a point shot from Brady Lyle for his 21st of the season. Controversy would strike in the period as well. Greg Meireles was initially assessed a game misconduct for flipping the puck into the crowd after a stoppage in play, but was eventually changed to only a ten-minute misconduct. The teams would play out the rest of the period to a 1-1 draw.
The Attack struck early to open the 2nd period. Less than a minute in, Daylon Groulx found himself in front of the net, he slapped in the rebound and the Attack had a 2-1 lead. Sergey Popov would later add to the Attack lead after waiting out Owen Sound native Lucas Pfeil in the Kitchener net before beating him 5-hole for his 10th of the season. The two-goal lead wouldn't last, and Greg Meireles returned from his 10-minute misconduct to score his 36th of the season and extend his point streak to 20 games. The period would end with the Attack ahead on shots, 31-17, and on the scoreboard, 3-2.
The third period would begin with the Attack looking to maintain their lead and end the season on a winning note. Groulx would do his part, adding his 2nd of the night and 19th of the season on a strong drive to the net just before the halfway mark of the 3rd. With the lead back to 2, Owen Sound did their best to play keep away from the Rangers for the remainder of the period. After a mad scramble at the end of the game to put the puck in an empty net that was ultimately unsuccessful, the Attack held on for a 4-2 victory.
The Mac Taylor Corporation Three Stars went to Daylon Groulx, Trent Bourque and Zach Poirier. The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Trent Bourque, with honourable mention to former Attack defenseman and current Kitchener overage defenseman Cole Cameron.
The Owen Sound Attack begin the playoffs on Thursday night in Sault Ste. Marie. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Owen Sound will take on the Greyhounds at the Bayshore on Monday, March 25th and Wednesday, March 27th, puck drop for both of those games is at 7 p.m.
