17 Hit Outburst Leads Keene Past Vermont, 7-3

KEENE, NH - The Swamp Bats were able to take advantage of a 17 hit night, topping Vermont on a warm Tuesday night in Keene, 7-3.

Leading the way for the Swamp Bats was Brandon Smith (Georgetown, IN/ Dayton), going 4-5 with a 2-run home run, a double, two singles and five RBI's. Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) had the best day at the plate for the Mountaineers, going 2-4 with an RBI.

Vermont got off to a quick 3-0 lead through two innings. Malm singled in Paul Witt (Harpers Ferry, WV/ VCU), and then came around to score on a single from Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern).

Keene would answer with three in the bottom of the third. Smith drove in two runs on a double to right field, and came around to score on a single from Joe Brreaux (Tomball, TX/ Alabama). Vermont starter Brian Herrmann (Northport, NY/ Stony Brook) was ejected after arguing that play. He went two and two thirds innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three. The Swamp Bats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Smith hit his fifth home run of the year, giving them the 5-3 lead. They would add two more in the sixth, and would go on to win 7-3.

Keene starter Evan Sperling (Poquoson, VA/ Virginia) went six innings, picking up his second win of the year. He gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits, also walking five and striking out seven. Andrew Kneussle (Plattsburgh, NY/ Canisius) took the loss for Vermont, going four innings in relief, giving up four runs on 11 hits while striking out two.

Vermont (6-15) returns to action Wednesday, July 4th at home against Upper Valley (10-10). They now sit 9.5 games behind first place Valley (15-5). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
