Gulls Split Double-Header against Upper Valley

NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport (11- 10) concluded its July 2nd matchup with the Upper Valley Nighthawks ( 10- 10 ) as part of Monday's day-night seven inning doubleheader at Cardines Field. The Gulls split the day, winning in game one by a score of 4 -2 before dropping game two 6 -5.

Game one started off with four scoreless innings for both sides until Tim Tawa broke the tie in the top of the fifth with a sac fly that scored Jack Gethings from third putting Newport up on the board. Later in that inning Zach Britton would score off of a double by Stevie Mangrum to put the Gulls up by two. Tyler Mattison had a solid outing giving up only one earned run and seven hits in five innings pitched. Zach Hoguison homered in the top of the sixth to put the Gulls up 3 - 1. The Gulls would not look back as they extended their lead in the seventh after a Dalton Reed RBI double giving Newport a 4 - 2 lead. Nic Enright picked up the save allowing one earned run and two hits in two innings pitched.

In game two the Gulls jumped out to an early as Zach Britton came through with an RBI single in the first inning. Later in the inning Kody Hoese hit a two run homer to give the Gulls a 3 - 0 lead. In the second inning, the Nighthawks put up a home run of their own in the top of the second inning to trim the Gulls lead. In the bottom of the second Stevie Mangrum came through with an RBI double to extend the Gulls lead. The Nighthawks scored two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Newport lead to one. Josh Bates pitched four innings allowing three hits and four earned runs. He was replaced by Austen Michel who gave up a run after a balk that tied the game at five. He was then replaced by Michael Kirian who gave up another run giving Upper Valley the lead. The Gulls couldn't regain the lead as the game ended with a 6 - 5 win for the Upper Valley Nighthawks.

The Gulls (11- 10) go on the road to Connecticut Tuesday night as they take on the Mystic Schooners (12- 9) at Fitch High School. The Gulls will then return home for a Fourth of July matchup against the Danbury Westerners on the Discover Newport 4th of July Celebration where 250 American flags will be given out courtesy of Discover Newport.
