10th Inning Sacrifice Fly Lifts Giants to Victory

San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - Bobby Haney's bases loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning scored the winning run to lift the San Jose Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants forced extra-innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth before Haney's sacrifice fly gave San Jose the walk-off win.

The game was scoreless until the top of the ninth inning when Visalia's Jon Griffin connected for a one-out solo homer to left off of Giants reliever Jose Valdez. The home run was Griffin's team- leading 23rd of the season.

San Jose though responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. After Joe Panik grounded out to start the frame, Adam Duvall reached base on a fielding error committed by Griffin at first. Ricky Oropesa followed with an infield single on a slow roller up the third base line to put runners at first and second before Alex Burg walked to load the bases. Rawhide reliever Blake Cooper recovered to strikeout Andrew Susac for the second out, but then Chris Lofton drew a five-pitch walk to force home Duvall with the tying run. Jarrad Page was up next, but he grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop as Lofton was forced out at second to end the inning.

Valdez bounced back with a perfect top of the 10th to keep the game tied before the Giants won the game in the bottom of the inning. Skyler Stromsmoe led off with a single to left center field before Carter Jurica struck out on a bunt attempt. Panik followed with a line drive single to left center on a hit-and-run play as Stromsmoe advanced to third. Then after Duvall walked to load the bases, Haney stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to center that easily scored Stromsmoe with the game-winning run.

Valdez (6-4) was credited with the win after working the last two innings for San Jose. He allowed one run on one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. Valdez retired the last five batters that he faced after surrendering the home run to Griffin.

Seth Simmons (0-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing the game- deciding run in the bottom of the 10th.

Both starting pitchers in the contest were spectacular as Kelvin Marte of the Giants dueled with Visalia's Bradin Hagens. Marte tossed the first six innings with just four hits allowed, no walks and three strikeouts. He set down 11 in a row to begin his start with the Rawhide's first baserunner coming on Mike Freeman's two-out single in the top of the fourth.

Marte also pitched around a two-out single in the fifth and a pair of one-out singles in the sixth to keep Visalia off the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, Hagens limited San Jose to one hit over eight scoreless innings of work. He walked three and struck out six during his stint on the mound. The Giants' only hit against Hagens came in the bottom of the fourth when Oropesa doubled down the right field line with two outs. Oropesa's hit put runners on second and third, however Hagens induced the next batter, Burg, to fly out to center for the third out.

San Jose also threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning as Stromsmoe reached on a Hagens fielding error to start the frame before moving to second on Jurica's sacrifice bunt and then taking third when Panik flied out. Hagens though kept the game scoreless when he retired Duvall on a groundout to shortstop.

Drew Bowlin (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Shawn Sanford (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings respectively out of the Giants bullpen.

Oropesa (2-for-4, 2B) was the only San Jose player to finish with a multi-hit game. The Rawhide out-hit the Giants by a 6-4 margin.
