BRIDGEPORT, CT - Center Justin Azevedo scored off of a bad angle shot as the Manchester Monarchs collected their first win of the 2010-11 season, a 2-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday evening.

Manchester (1-1-0-0) is tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with two points. Bridgeport (1-1-0-0) is also tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with two points.

"The win over Bridgeport is a step in the right direction," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "Erik Ersberg gave us a superb effort and we got greasy goals from hard work around the Sound Tiger's net. Both goalies played well but our last goal held up. Our compete-level as a group was much better than last night. We still have lots of work to do to be more consistent. It's important our guys understand how to stick together and play as a cohesive unit."

Azevedo netted his first goal of the season at 9:19 of the final period to lift the Monarchs to the 2-1 victory. Left wing Bud Holloway sent the puck behind the Sound Tigers' cage and Azevedo scooped it up. The center skated to the right side of the net along the goal line and tossed a bad angle shot on net that eluded goaltender Mikko Koskinen. Right wing Brandon Kozun picked up his first professional point by assisting on the game-winning goal.

Following an early fight between Monarchs right wing Justin Johnson and Sound Tigers right wing Jeremy Yablonski, Bridgeport lit the lamp at 13:18 of the opening frame when right wing Robin Figren netted his second goal of the season. Center Micheal Haley carried the puck into the Monarchs zone along the left wing. After getting hip-checked by Monarchs defenseman David Kolomatis, Haley shoved the puck around the boards to defenseman Dylan Reese on the right wing half wall. Reese found Figren streaking through the center of the zone and the winger one-timed a shot that beat goaltender Erik Ersberg for the first goal of the game.

The Monarchs evened the score at 1-1 with left wing Dwight King's second goal of the season at 6:08 of the second period. Center Oscar Moller sent the puck up the right wing boards and behind the net to right wing John Zeiler. The veteran put the breaks on behind the cage and spun around sliding the puck into the crease. King was on the doorstep to tap the puck past Koskinen's right pad and into the net to tie the game.

Bridgeport scored with less than one second remaining on the clock but the officials waived off the goal due to an illegal hand pass.

Ersberg (1-0-0) earned his first win of the season stopping 27-of-28 shots. Koskinen (1-1-0) took his first loss of the season recording 30 saves on 32 shots.

Manchester was 0-for-4 on the power play. Bridgeport was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
