Florida Flame News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla., November 3 --The Florida Flame have announced the results of the 2005 NBA Development League Draft. With the #1 pick overall, the Flame selected 5-10, point guard and NBA veteran, Andre Barrett, who spent the 2004-05 campaign with the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic.
The Flame's other selections include 6-4, shooting guard Ricky Shields (2nd round), 6-2, point guard Kyle Bailey (3rd round), 6-8, small forward Jonathan Moore (4th round), 6-11, center George Leach (5th round), 6-2, point guard E.J. Rowland (6th round), 6-7, guard/forward Romel Beck (7th round), 7-0, center Anwar Ferguson (8th round), 6-6, small forward Josh Gross (9th round), and 6-4, shooting guard Torrian Jones (10th round).
"We are very pleased with the results from this year's draft," said Flame Head Coach Jeff Malone. "Our draft was built around our returning players, but we knew we needed a veteran point guard. That's what we have with Andre Barrett. But we also were able to draft some intriguing young guys that we're anxious to see compete in training camp against our veterans."
Barrett split the 2004-05 season in the NBA with the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic. In 27 games with Houston, Barrett averaged 2.1 points and 1.6 assists in 11.6 minutes per contest. After moving on to Orlando, the New York native out of Seton Hall averaged 5.6 points and 2.5 assists in 11 games with the Magic.
An AP Honorable Mention All-American as a senior at Seton Hall in 2003-04, Barrett also earned First Team All-Big East honors with the Pirates, averaging a team-high 17.3 points and 5.9 assists per game. Barrett also tallied 19 points and six assists in Seton Hall's NCAA Tournament first round match-up against Arizona. Overall, Barrett posted averages of 15.3 points and 5.4 assists per contest during his four-year collegiate career with the Pirates.
"Tonight's draft was a solid start to our second season of play," said Florida Assistant Coach and Director of Basketball Operations, Terry Thimlar. "Placing an extremely competitive basketball team on the floor is vital to our success. Coach Malone and I have worked hard to bring in the best of the best. We're anxious to get started."
The 10 players selected by the Florida Flame join the team's two allocated players (Theron Smith and Chris Brooks), one player picked from local tryouts (FGCU's Roman Brown), and four returners from last season (Hiram Fuller, Kendall Dartez, Tremaine Fowlkes, and Sean Finn).
