Nationals News:

NATIONALS OWNER INDUCTED INTO POTOMAC HALL OF FAME

The Potomac Nationals Chairman and Owner got a birthday surprise on Saturday July 16th. During a pre-game ceremony, Potomac Nationals Treasurer Seth Silber announced the induction of his father, Arthur L. Silber into the Potomac Hall of Fame while the rest of his family, Nationals staff and players and over 3,000 Nationals fans looked on. General Manager, Jay Richardson, unveiled the plaque that will be hung on the Hall of Fame wall along with the 2004 inductees: Barry Bonds, Andy Pettitte and Bernie Williams.

Art Silber was born on July 14, 1940 and he grew up in the shadows of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, NY. Silber was the starting shortstop for Martin Van Buren High School and Franklin and Marshall College. He was offered a minor league contract in 1962 by the Kansas City Athletics. Silber was a Little League baseball coach during the late 70's and early 80's. He has served as the Chairman/Owner of the Potomac franchise since 1990 and as first base coach for over a decade. Due to his tenure as first base coach, he is reknown as the "Oldest First Base Coach in Minor League Baseball". Silber proudly wears #42 on his uniform in honor of his boyhood idol Jackie Robinson.

POTOMAC NATIONALS GENERAL MANAGER PROMOTED

The Potomac Nationals minor league baseball team has a new star -- owner Art Silber announced Wednesday, July 20, that General Manager Jay Richardson has been promoted to Vice President and General Manager.

Richardson, along with Silber, was a key player in the affiliation change from the Cincinnati Reds to the then-Montreal Expos in September of 2004. Shortly after Potomac affiliated with Montreal, Major League Baseball announced that the Expos would move to Washington, DC for the 2005 season and become the Washington Nationals. Richardson is the club's primary contact person in matters that involve the Washington Nationals.

Silber said, "Jay has been the ultimate professional and done an extraordinary job at a time when we are going through the greatest change in the history of our ball club."

Richardson's next challenge will be to oversee the club's transition from G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, home to the franchise since 1984, to a new state-of-the-art facility in Prince William County for the 2007 season.

POTOMAC NATIONALS INFIELDER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Potomac Nationals third baseman Kory Casto was named the Carolina League player of the week for the week ending July 24. It is the third time this season Casto has been named Player of the Week.

Casto blasted six home runs in seven games and knocked in 11 RBI. Casto ended the week with a .444 average, a .531 on base percentage and a 1.111 slugging percentage. Casto is second in the league hits (109), in RBI (70), runs scored (64) and extra base hits (48). He is tied for third in the lead in home runs (19) with Winston-Salem's Noah Hall.

Kinston Indians RHP Tom Mastny was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week. Mastny went 2-0 last week improving his season record to 5-2. In 10.1 innings of work he allowed only one run on seven hits and struck out 16 to earn a 0.87 ERA. Mastny's season ERA improves to 2.54.

July 18 Potomac 6 Salem 4 Casto went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two homers. The second homer came in the bottom of the 10th with one on, giving the P-Nats the walk off win.

July 19 Salem 10 Potomac 4 Casto homered in his second straight game and drove in two runs but it wasn't enough to catch the Avalanche.

July 20 Potomac 8 Salem 3 Diaz went 3-for-4 with a double, Chop went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Casto went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. The homer was Casto's fourth in three games.

July 21 Potomac 6 Salem 5 After 14 innings and just under four and a half hours, Chop drove in pinch runner (and LHP) Stevenson with a base hit down the first base line for the game victory and series win over the Avs.

July 22 Potomac 0 Kinston 0 Game suspended in top of the second inning with Kory Casto at third, Salomon Manriquez at second, Chop up to bat and two outs on the board due to massive rain and lightning in Kinston. Stevenson, the winning run from the night before was on the mound for the P-Nats.

July 23 Kinston 4 Potomac 3 In the continuation of Friday's game, Chop singled in both Casto and Manriquez putting the P-Nats up 2-0. But Kinston came back to tie it in the fifth then take the 4-2 lead in the seventh. Manriquez solo homered in the ninth to put the P-Nats within one but they could not rally any further.

July 24 Game 1: Potomac 9 Kinston 0 LHP Brett Price went seven innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out nine. Jason Belcher, Ian Desmond and Casto all homered in the game.

Game 2: Kinston 4 Potomac 3 Shawn Norris and Diaz put the only three runs on the board for the P-Nats as Kinston won in the bottom of the eighth (extra innings). Norris had a 2-run homer and Diaz had a solo shot in the top of the third.

The Nationals start a three game series at Myrtle Beach tonight starting at 7:02. LHP Mike O'Connor (5-9, 4.39) is the probable starter for the P-Nats.
