Westchester Knicks Outshine Austin Spurs to Secure Best Record in The
January 9, 2018 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS, NY, - The Westchester Knicks (18-9), the official NBA G League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, came out on top of what was a close call of a game, besting the Austin Spurs (14-10), the San Antonio Spurs' affiliate 95-92. With the win, Westchester now holds the best record in the NBA G League.
Knicks affiliate Xavier Rathan-Mayes led all scorers in the game with 22 points, adding seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals while Two-Way player Luke Kornet supplied 19 points and eight rebounds. Knicks affiliate Nigel Hayes finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Trey Burke capped his night at 14 points and five assists.
Spurs center Livio Jean-Charles paced his team with 19 points, notching a double-double with 11 rebounds. Forward Jaron Blossomgame also finished with a double-double, ending with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Spurs Two-Way player Darrun Hilliard also supplied 18 points to go with six assists and five rebounds. Oliver Hanlan provided 14 points, while Nick Johnson rounded out the starters with 10 points and three steals.
After Austin jumped out with an 8-0 run to start the game, Westchester's Trey Burke answered back with seven points in a row. The Knicks turned the tides briefly with two short-lived leads, but lost momentum at the end of the quarter as the Spurs held a seven-point lead heading to the second. Momentum shifted once again however, the Knicks outscoring Austin 31-22 in the second. Shooting 70 percent from three in the first half, Westchester ended it holding a two-point advantage.
A dismal third quarter did little for either team, though as the Spurs managed just 16 points, Westchester extended its lead to seven. Austin made a quick turnaround in the final quarter though, sparking a 9-1 run to tie up the game. The visitors would go as far as a one-possession lead with 3:47 left in the game, but a quick five points from Westchester would become the extra boost for the Knicks to ultimately win 95-92.
Both teams will head north next for this week's 2018 NBA G League Showcase, the league's annual scouting event. Held this year in Mississauga, Ontario, home of the Raptors 905, each team will play two regular-season games in front of front office executives and scouts. Westchester will first take on the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Houston Rockets' affiliate, on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m. Rio Grande Valley is currently leading the Western Conference with a record of 17-9.
