Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS, NY - The Westchester Knicks (11-11), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, came out on the wrong side of a hard-fought battle against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (15-7), the Indiana Pacers' affiliate, falling 119-111 at home. On a brighter note for the home team, 30 children from the Garden of Dreams Foundation had the opportunity to take part in special experiences throughout the game including Honorary General Manager, Honorary Westchester Knicks Dancer, and Player for the Day.
Keith Wright led the Knicks with a career-high 23 points, adding 11 rebounds for the double-double and three steals for good measure. Courtney Fells poured in 17 points with four steals three rebounds, while Doron Lamb had 15 points and four rebounds. Damien Inglis did a little bit of everything, contributing 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block. Von Wafer came off the bench for 16 points; Kevin Capers contributing 11 points and six assists.
The Mad Ants' comeback was powered by Alex Poythress, who scored 35 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Fort Wayne's offensive juggernaut was continued by Trey McKinney Jones who totaled 28 total points, with 11 of those coming in the fourth quarter. Stephan Hicks put up 20 points with four crucial rebounds.
Westchester was tested early in the ballgame as they trailed nearly every minute of the opening quarter. The Knicks showed resiliency and after inching closer and closer to the lead, Jaylen Bond tied the game with 2:12 to play. Courtney Fells poured in eight points to help Westchester escape the first quarter with a 30-28 lead over the Mad Ants.
The Knicks took its hard fought lead and ran away with it in the second quarter. Westchester never trailed in the second and extended their lead as high as 13 points. Von Wafer was a huge asset off the bench leading the team with 10 points.
Momentum was on the Knicks' side as they closed out the second quarter with a 64-55 lead.
Every basket was earned in the third quarter as Westchester battled to maintain its lead over the Mad Ants. Things got too close for comfort as Westchester's lead was cut to one with 3:17 to play. The Mad Ants were close to reclaiming its lead until Keith Wright nailed a shot from beyond the arc to help put the Knicks back up by four. At the end of three quarters, Westchester maintained an 84-80 lead over the Mad Ants.
It had been the Knicks game all night until the fourth quarter happened. After a relentless push by the Mad Ants, Westchester was outscored 39-27 in the final quarter. After the game was tied 87 a piece at the 8:58 minute mark, the Knicks' lead was soon lost and never to be found again. Keith Wright's instinctive play and his team-high eight fourth quarter points wasn't enough to power Westchester past their opponent. The Knicks ultimately fell 119-111.
