Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors in partnership with Santa Cruz City Schools will launch a fifth annual "Read to Achieve" season, presented by Kaiser Permanente, the team announced today.
During the 2015-16 campaign, seven elementary and middle schools in the Santa Cruz City School District in addition to Starlight Elementary School in Watsonville and Pacific Elementary in Davenport read more than 513 million words, besting previous years' totals by more than 200 million words. Since the program's inception during the inaugural 2012-13 season, Santa Cruz City School students have read over 1.75 billion words.
This year's program will reach over 7,000 students in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties over the next three months through the addition of select expansion schools and events throughout the Central Coast.
All Santa Cruz Warriors players and coaches participate in the program as "Read to Achieve" Captains. Each player and coach will partner with a Santa Cruz County school and will make three visits to each school beginning Monday and continuing through April. The players and coaches will participate in reading rallies, school assemblies, and basketball clinics to create excitement around reading. Students at each school will have the opportunity to earn prizes such as bookmarks, pencil cases, bobbleheads, and Santa Cruz Warriors and Golden State Warriors tickets.
On Jan. 30, over 4,200 students will participate in "Reading Rallies" across Santa Cruz County.
