Vipers Hold off Iowa Energy at Home

Hidalgo, Texas, December 29, 201 6 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers, NBA D-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, defeated Iowa Energy 139-121. Darius Morris scored 30 points in the game.

Darius Morris scored 30 points on the night, going 11-14 from the free throw line. Chinanu Onuaku had a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds in the game. Iowa's Terry Whisnant led both teams in scoring with 38 points.

Both teams kept it close in the first quarter. Gary Payton II started strong for the home team getting five points and three assists. The Vipers finished the opening quarter with a 27-25 lead over Iowa Energy.

After obtaining the lead in the first quarter, the Vipers held on to it for the remainder of the night. The Vipers, scored 42 in the second quarter to distance themselves from the away team. Chris Johnson scored 10 points in the second quarter to hand RGV a 69-53 lead over Iowa at the half.

The third quarter was a high-scoring quarter, with 82 points being scored between both teams. Terry Whisnant had scored 32 points so far in the game which saw the Vipers' lead being cut to just 10 points, 107-97. A big fourth quarter performance by Darius Morris, nine points and three rebounds, secured the 139-121 win over Iowa Energy.

Rio Grande Valley will have a short to rest as they prepare to catch an early flight. The Vipers will travel to Oklahoma City to face the Blue tomorrow night at 7p.m.
