Arkansas Travelers News Release

FRISCO, TEXAS - The Arkansas Travelers were outslugged by the Frisco RoughRiders in a 9-7 loss, their seventh straight to the Rangers double-A affiliate. The Travs scored four runs in the first inning and had a 6-4 lead in the second inning, but Frisco's four-run third inning proved to be the difference in their eighth in nine games. The Travs also lost starting pitcher Jordan Walden to a strained right forearm after facing two batters in the first inning. Left fielder Branden Florence had to leave the game in the seventh after pulling a hamstring.

Arkansas right fielder Val Majeski finished 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Travs 11-hit attack. However Frisco's bullpen held the Travs to no runs and two base hits over the last five innings.

Riders' lefty Zach Phillips relieved in the fourth inning after the Travs scored six runs against starter Mike Kirkman. Phillips allowed just an unearned run over three innings on two base hits before handing the ball to Pedro Strop (W, 2-3). The Travs managed just one hit off Strop plus one walk while striking out three times.

The Travs big first inning started with shortstop Hainley Statia legging out the first of two infield singles on the night. Kirkman lost command with two outs walking consecutive hitters on eight pitches. Florence then cleared the bases with a double into right-center field. Majewski followed with an RBI single to right field, but was thrown out at second base to end the inning after the throw to the plate.

Walden allowed a leadoff single by Craig Gentry then threw wildly on a pickoff moving him to second base. Walden's last pitch of the night was a wild pitch fired over the head of Dustin Majewski for a walk. Bryan Rembisz (L, 2-3) relieved and his the first batter he faced to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Mitch Moreland and a three-run homer by John Whittleman (5) tied the game, at 4-4.

Hank Conger singled home two runs with two outs in the second inning to put Arkansas back on top 6-4.

Rembisz wasn't able to hold the lead allowing four runs to score in the third inning. Tim Smith hit a leadoff home run (3) to bring Frisco within a run. Moreland singled and Rembisz walked Whittleman then Chad Tracy ripped a double past third base scoring both runners giving Frisco a 7-6 lead. Fernando Rodriguez relieved and allowed an RBI double by Adam Fox putting Frisco up 8-6.

Fox's hit was the only allowed by Rodriguez over a dominating 4.2 innings where he struck out two and retired the last 10 batters he faced.

The Travs loaded the bases against Phillips in the fourth inning on two walks and an infield single by Statia. Florence got another bases-loaded opportunity and hit a hard grounder that Fox misplayed at second base for an error which allowed a run to score. Down 8-7, the Travs left the bases loaded as Phillips caught Majewski looking for the third out.

Bourjos hit a one-out double in the fifth inning to get the tying run into scoring position, but he was caught stealing third base by catcher Manny Pina.

Frisco scored an insurance run in the eighth inning off David Herndon on three straight two-out singles to lead 9-7.

Strop allowed two base runners in the ninth on a walk and a single but right hander Beau Vaughan induced Jay Caligiuri to bounce out to first base to end the game.

Time of game was 3:03 and the paid attendance was 4,839.

The Travs finish their six-game road trip on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. and are bringing up left hander Michael Anton (2-6, 4.07 at Arkansas) from single-A Rancho Cucamonga to pitch the finale. Frisco goes with righty Blake Beavan (1-2, 5.65).
