Tip at the Buzzer Gives Westchester Knicks Thrilling Win over Raptors
December 22, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
MiSSISSAUGA, ON - The Westchester Knicks (9-5), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, avoided overtime and went straight for the win over the Raptors 905 (10-5), the Toronto Raptors' affiliate, with a tip at the buzzer from Keith Wright. The final score: 108-106.
Wright finished with 16 points, a season-high for the forward, just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Doron Lamb led the Knicks with a team-high 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Damien Inglis supplied 17 points, five assists, and three rebounds, while Chasson Randle finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Kevin Capers and Jordon Crawford both supplied double-digits from the bench, with 12 and 10 respectively.
Axel Toupane paced the Raptors 905 with 17 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Fred VanVleet finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 assists, adding three each of rebounds and steals. CJ Leslie supplied 14 points from the bench, while Brady Heslip and Edy Tavares each had 12.
The home team struggled in the first quarter, the Knicks holding the Raptors to just 14 points. Uncharacteristically for the league-leaders in three-point percentage, Westchester took just one shot from beyond the arc with 18 of its 25 first quarter points coming within the paint. The 905 fared better in the second quarter, outscoring the Knicks by nine off a 9-0 run to pull within two points to end the half.
Raptors 905 tied it up 62-62 midway through the third quarter, but Westchester refused to give up the lead. Fast-forward to the final three minutes of the game, where the 905 did manage to take its first lead of the game outside of the first two points scored. The teams ensued in a back-and-forth of no more than a one-point advantage on either side, as it looked like the teams were destined to head into overtime. Westchester's Keith Wright had a different plan though, as he tipped in a layup at the buzzer to give the Knicks a thrilling finish with the win.
The teams will swap places tomorrow as the Westchester Knicks host the Raptors 905 back home at the Westchester County Center in a 7:00 p.m. ET matchup. 'Tis the season to celebrate as the team gets in the holiday spirit with a special appearance from Santa. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Winter Bomber Hat provided by Empress EMS.
The game will be broadcast live on MSG Networks and Facebook Live.
