Third Quarter Surge Sends Skyforce to Rout of Spurs
December 16, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Sioux Falls Skyforce News Release
Sioux Falls (10-3) is now 6-0 at the Sanford Pentagon this year, and is the only D-League team still unbeaten at home. Five of those wins have been by double digits.
While the score might suggest otherwise, this game was tightly contested for most of the game.
The Spurs (5-8) trailed 72-70 with 5:55 left in the third quarter, but Sioux Falls blew the game wide open with a 16-3 run to take a 88-73 lead heading into the fourth.
Skyforce guard Marcus Posley was instrumental in the surge, as he scored 13 points in the quarter on the strength of nailing three 3-pointers. Henry Walker also hit a pair from deep during the run.
Sioux Falls would extend that run to 21-5 with five quick points from Denver Nuggets assignee Malik Beasley in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Sioux Falls led by as many as 18 at one point in the quarter.
Briante Weber scored 18 points with seven rebounds and seven assists. The D-League steals leader also added five steals. Jabril Trawick scored a team-high 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting while Beasley added 22 points and Posley chipped in 18.
San Antonio Spurs assignee Dejounte Murray scored 11 points and had six assists.
Sioux Falls took a 59-58 lead into halftime despite allowing the Spurs to shoot 56.1 percent from the floor. So when the Skyforce locked in on defense, they finally got rolling. Austin connected on just 43.9 percent of its field goals after the break.
