Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

Richmond, VA - The Harrisburg Senators (64-61) rallied from two early deficits on Saturday night, and succeeded in holding off Richmond (53-72) by a final of 8-5 in front of 9,464 fans at The Diamond. The Squirrels squandered leads of 2-0 and 5-2 as Harrisburg came back to snap their five-game losing streak. Richmond's Chris Shaw homered, doubled and reached base four times in the defeat. Starting pitchers Kyle Crick and Whit Mayberry both received no-decisions in the contest. The Squirrels will conclude their brief three game homestand on Sunday, August 21st with Guns & Hoses and Brunch & Baseball. The full promotional schedule can be viewed here. The Senators were resilient on the night, coming back from several early deficits to end their five-game losing streak. Richmond struck in the bottom of the first against spot starter and UVA product Whit Mayberry. Hunter Cole sparked the offense with a walk and Chris Shaw followed with a two run homer to left center field for a 2-0 lead. The home run was Shaw's 4th at Double-A and his 20th overall on the year.

Harrisburg returned fire immediately against Richmond's Kyle Crick. Drew Ward led off the second inning with a double, but Crick retired the next two hitters, nearly escaping the inning. Crick then walked Khayyaan Norfork and Whit Mayberry to load the bases. Rafael Bautista then stepped to the plate and connected on a two-run single to tie the game, 2-2. Bautista recorded three hits on the night to power the Senators offense.

Richmond regained the lead with a run in the third and two more in the fifth. Steven Duggar lashed a triple into left center to lead off the third inning and scored with two outs on a sacrifice fly. The triple extended Duggar's hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. Duggar did it again in the fifth inning, lacing a two-run single to give Richmond a 5-2 lead. Brandon Bednar and Darren Ford reached to begin the frame prior to Duggar' second hit of the night.

Unfortunately for the Squirrels, Harrisburg stormed back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Crick lost some of his control and walked Isaac Ballou to load the bases. Drew Ward then worked an RBI walk and Spencer Kieboom tied the game with an infield single that tipped off the glove of Crick. Crick finished off the fifth and was removed to start the sixth inning. Crick, along with his counterpart Mayberry, received a no-decision in the effort. The righty allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He walked four and struck out four.

Tyler Mizenko relieved Crick in the sixth but encountered immediate difficulty. Harrisburg hoisted up three runs in the inning, taking their first lead of the night. Mizenko walked Norfork and relinquished a one-out single to Rafael Bautista. Andrew Stevenson then snapped the 5-5 contest with an RBI single and Isaac Ballou drove home a pair with a double for an 8-5 lead. Mizenko (2-6) pitched one inning and suffered the loss.

Harrisburg's Mayberry also lasted five innings in receiving a no-decision. Reliever Derek Self entered to start the sixth inning and kept the Squirrels down over three innings. Self (4-2) earned the win and struck out three in the outing. Nick Lee replaced Self and tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to close out the game. Self allowed runners on in each of his two innings but was able to navigate through traffic to earn the save.

The Squirrels will conclude their brief three game homestand on Sunday August 21st with Guns & Hoses and Brunch & Baseball. Right-hander Nestor Molinawill make his first start for Richmond against Harrisburg RHP Erick Fedde. The full promotional schedule can be viewed here.
