ZEBULON, NC - The Salem Red Sox took an early lead but saw their offense sputter late in Game 1 of their doubleheader Saturday, falling 3-2 in eight innings to the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium.

The Sox (18-22, 50-58) took their third straight loss and fell eight games below .500 for the first time all season. Carolina (20-18, 54-54) rallied from a 2-0 deficit and stifled Salem's bats late, as no Red Sox hitter reached base after the fourth inning.

Salem drew first blood in the top of the second inning against Carolina starting pitcher Conor Harber (ND), who gave up a leadoff ground-rule double to Michael Osinski up the left-field line. With one away, Chris Madera slashed an RBI double to left-center field, scoring Osinski and putting the Sox out front 1-0.

The Sox doubled their lead in the top of the third. With one out, Brett Netzer pounded a deep fly to right field that just bounced off the top of and over the wall for a solo homer, rebounding high onto the field. Carolina skipper Joe Ayrault protested the call, but to no avail, and the dinger stood to give Salem a 2-0 lead.

Carolina broke through in the bottom of the fourth against Salem starting pitcher Tanner Houck (ND), who walked leadoff man Cooper Hummel. A single by Dallas Carroll sent Hummel speeding to third base, and a daring suicide squeeze bunt plated Hummel to trim Salem's lead to 2-1.

The Mudcats drew level in the bottom of the fifth, as Houck again issued a leadoff walk, this time to Rob Henry. Henry stole second and Devin Hairston cracked a single to advance Hairston to third base. Houck recovered to fan Mario Feliciano, but Demi Orimoloye was able to loft a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Henry and tying the game at 2-2. Neither team could score again in regulation, sending the game to extra innings.

The Sox were unable to break through against Mudcats reliever Luke Barker (W, 6-3) in the top of the eighth, and they wouldn't get another chance to hit. In the bottom of the eighth, pinch runner Nick Roscetti began the inning at second base, but Hunter Smith (L, 2-1) managed to throw him out on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Trever Morrison. However, Henry scorched a deep fly to right for a game-winning double, scoring Morrison for the 3-2 win.

Houck took a no-decision, surrendering two runs on six hits and two walks while whiffing eight batters. Durbin Feltman worked around two walks and a wild pitch in his Salem debut, striking out two in a scoreless inning. Smith allowed a run on two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of relief.
