Red Sox and Dash Suspended in Extras

Salem Red Sox News Release

SALEM, Va. (August 31, 2016)- The Salem Red Sox fell behind the Winston-Salem Dash early, but mounted a furious ninth-inning charge to send the game to extra innings before it was suspended with the game tied at seven prior to the top of the 11^th inning.

Red Sox (83-50, 40-24) starting pitcher Michael Kopech struggled with his command early, walking the first five batters he faced. After settling down to produce a strikeout and a pop out, the righty surrendered a grand slam to Brett Austin, giving the Dash a 6-0 lead.

Kopech was removed from the game after the homer - the first the flamethrower has allowed this season. Wednesday's start also marked the first time in 35 career starts that the Texan has allowed more than three earned runs.

Winston-Salem (55-78, 27-36) tacked on an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning against Yankory Pimentel when Michael Suiter doubled to plate Cleuluis Rondon to extend the advantage to 7-0.

In the bottom of the fourth against Banks, Mike Meyers led off with a single, stole second base, advanced to third on a Jordan Betts single and scored on a Ben Moore groundout to cut the hole to 7-1.

Salem chipped away further in the sixth, when Nick Longhi led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Betts two-bagger to shave the deficit to 7-2.

As the offense pecked away, Pimentel, Jeffry Fernandez and Jake Cosart in the Red Sox bullpen kept the Dash at bay, combining to allow just one unearned run in 9.1 innings.

The Red Sox drew closer in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Brandon Quintero. Rafael Devers and Longhi began with back-to-back singles. Mike Meyers rolled a grounder to the left side of the infield that Quintero fielded and threw wildly up the right field line, allowing Devers to score and narrow the gap to 7-3.

David Sopilka singled to begin the bottom of the ninth against Quintero, and Deiner Lopez followed with a double. After a strikeout, Jose Sermo launched a mammoth three-run home run to draw Salem within one.

Yelmison Peralta relieved Quintero and struck out Devers, but allowed a double to Longhi with two strikes, putting the tying run in scoring position with two outs. Down to his final strike, Meyers cracked a double to even the score. He was stranded at third as Betts struck out.

Neither team scored in the 10^th inning, and before the 11^th frame could begin, the tarp was called for as rain began to fall. The game was suspended, and will be continued at 5:30 pm Thursday night. Gates will open at 5:00 pm.

After the completion of the suspended contest, The Red Sox finish their series with the Dash Thursday night at LewisGale Field. First pitch is scheduled for no earlier than 7:05 pm regardless of the time of completion of the suspended game. LHP Trey Ball (8-5, 3.77) will take the mound for Salem, against RHP Zach Thompson (2-5, 6.00) of Winston-Salem.
