Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks (14-18) scored the game's first run, but was unable to sustain anything else offensively as they fell in the series finale to the Potomac Nationals (19-14) 5-1 Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. Wilmington was held to just one hit on the night and the lone run was driven in by Khalil Lee in the setback. Wilmington ended the homestand dropping four of six games on the Riverfront.
The start of the game seemed promising for the Blue Crew. Kort Peterson laced a double down the left field line, moved to third on a D.J. Burt sacrifice bunt before Lee drove him in with a groundout to take a 1-0 lead. Potomac tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single from Rhett Wiseman to make it 1-1. In the fifth inning, Potomac broke the game open thanks to a Juan Soto three-run home run and RBI groundout from Trace Barrera to make it a 5-1 score.
The Rocks were unable to formulate anything offensively and was held without a hit for the final eight innings of the ballgame. They were able to draw four walks with Meibrys Viloria and Chase Vallot each earning two. Righty Jace Vines suffered the loss despite allowing three earned runs on 11 hits in six innings of work.
The Blue Rocks begin a four-game series at Carolina starting Thursday, May 10 at Five County Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with righty Ofreidy Gomez (1-2, 4.87 ERA) making the start for the Rocks while right-hander Trey Supak (1-1, 1.97 ERA) makes the start for the Mudcats. Fans can listen to the game as Matt Janus will have the call on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
After posting four five straight games with at least eight hits, Wilmington was limited to just one hit on Wednesday night. Kort Peterson was the only hit and eventual run in the loss as he came around to score after leading off the game with a double. With only one hit on Wednesday night, that becomes the lowest mark of the season for the Rocks and the first time they've been held to a single base knock since August 27 in the 2014 season which was also against Potomac.
Rubber matches have been a thorn in Wilmington's side so far in the 2018 campaign. With the loss on Wednesday, the Rocks are now 1-4 in series deciding games. During the homestand, the Blue Rocks won the first game of both series against Frederick and Potomac but dropped the remaining two. This is the sixth series loss for Wilmington as they fall to 2-7 in series closing games.Â
Entering Wednesday night's game, the Rocks were 5-0 in games that threatened to put them four games below .500 on the season. With the loss, this marks the first time the Blue Rocks have been four games below sea-level and four games out of first place since April 27 when they were 9-12 on the season.
