The "M.A.D." Program Begins Friday With "Shop With A Cop"
PORTLAND, Maine - November 30, 2017 - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, announced today a new partnership with the Portland Police Department, unveiling the Maine Red Claws/Portland Police "M.A.D.," or "Making A Difference" Program. The goal of the initiative is to strengthen the relationship between the police and the Greater Portland community in which they serve.
The Red Claws will support several Portland Police existing efforts, including the "Shop With A Cop," "Positive Tickets," "Cop Camp" and "RAD" campaigns.
"This is an exciting new partnership for the Maine Red Claws," said team president Dajuan Eubanks. "We pride ourselves in being a strong part of this community. Teaming up with the Portland Police to impact the community in a positive way is very important to us."
"We're extremely proud of our community policing efforts and programs, but the reality is we need successful partnerships to make them work," said Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck. "That's why we're so excited to be partnering with a great team like the Maine Red Claws as we strive to truly make a difference in the lives of our youth for years to come."
Started in 2005, "Shop With A Cop" is a program that allows 12 children in need to go holiday shopping for their families. Police officers escort the children, who are winners of an essay writing contest, to shop, then return to the police station to wrap their presents. "Shop With A Cop" will take place this Friday, and will conclude at the Red Claws' home game vs. Raptors 905 at the Portland Expo.
"Positive Tickets" is a program where officers recognize a youth for doing something good - the officer then gives the individual a positive ticket which includes a reward. Students are recognized and rewarded at elementary school assembly events.
"Cop Camp" is a summer camp program, offering youth insight into job opportunities within law enforcement, including Game Wardens, Forest Rangers, Bomb Squad, Dive Team and Fire Services.
"RAD" is a self-defense program offered to women and children. Teaming up with the Amy St. Laurent Foundation since 2002, Portland Police has helped teach over 3,000 individuals in the Greater Portland area how to keep themselves safe through life-saving skills.
