Hammerheads Roughed up by West Texas

June 20, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Odessa, TX: The Hammerheads looked to finish off the 2010 regular season by evening their record at 7-7. Those hopes ended early as the West Texas Roughnecks (7-7) scored quickly and often in route to a 75-32 victory.

The Roughnecks opened the scoring when Austin Smith intercepted QB Wes Coopers pass and returned it for a score on the Hammerheads first offensive play of the game. The Roughnecks would go on to out score Corpus Christi 20 - 7 in the first quarter and would increase the lead to 37 -14 after thirty minutes of play.

Corpus Christi didn't fair much better in the second half of play. Already shorthanded, dressing just 19 players, the Hammerheads secondary took a huge hit losing defensive backs Rueben Flowers and Henry Hall to injuries. Those injuries forced Corpus Christi to utilize Brian Murph and Justin Hardman in the secondary and the inexperience showed as the Hammerhead defense had no answer for the Roughneck passing attack. With the loss the Hammerheads close the regular season at 6-8.

Corpus Christi will have a week to regroup before beginning the IFL playoffs next week in Little Rock against the Arkansas Diamonds. Corpus Christi lost the two regular season meetings with the Diamonds but the feeling amongst the Coaching Staff and Players is if they limit their mistakes, they can get a victory, and move on in the post season. The major question the Hammerheads will have heading into the playoffs is the health of the team.

Hall will most likely play, but Flowers and OL/DL Myqual Spann are questionable pending further examination this week.

Kickoff for Saturday's playoff game is set for 7:05pm. Fans can follow the action with Scott Howe on ESPN Corpus Christi, (1230AM, 96.1FM and 103.3FM). The broadcast begins at 6:40pm.
