Asheville Tourists News Release
HICKORY-- Brandon Gold churned out a season-high eight innings pitched for the Asheville Tourists on Saturday night against the Hickory Crawdads. Even with the lengthy outing by the Tourists starting pitcher, Asheville came up short thanks to a pair of timely Home Runs by the Crawdads. Hickory won 6-4.
In the bottom of the first inning, Gold induced a groundball off the bat of Ricky Valencia. The grounder should've ended the inning; however, a throwing error kept the frame alive. Hickory's Ti'Quan Forbes hit a three-run Home Run on the next pitch thrown by Gold.
Asheville fought their way right back into the game with two runs in the top of the second. The Tourists pounded out three straight singles to begin the frame; the latter was an RBI base hit by Joel Diaz. After that, Carlos Herrera scored on a fielder's choice and the Tourists trailed 3-2 after the inning.
In the top of the third, Jose Gomez hit an RBI triple to tie the score. The next batter, Willie Abreu, doubled to plate Gomez and that gave the Tourists a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, Abreu's double would be the final hit of the game for Asheville.
The score remained 4-3 until Gold ran into trouble in the sixth. Another throwing error tied the game and set up Valencia to play the hero role for the Crawdads. Valencia squared up one of Gold's pitches and hit it over the right-field wall for a two-run Home Run.
Hickory's bullpen kept the Tourists from fighting back. Asheville did put two runners aboard in the top of the ninth but Gomez lined out to end the game. C.D. Pelham and Jake Lemoine combined for 4.1 shutout innings in relief of Hickory's starting pitcher Matt Ball.
