SAN JOSE, CA - The Modesto Nuts used a three-run top of the sixth to erase a deficit Sunday afternoon and then held off the Giants late in a 6-5 win over San Jose at Municipal Stadium. With the loss, the Giants (30-27) dropped two out of three games in the series.

Gio Brusa (3-for-4, HR, RBI) had three hits, including a solo home run, in his return from the disabled list to lead San Jose offensively in defeat. Matt Winn (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) also homered while Kelby Tomlinson (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) contributed three hits and two RBI's.

Logan Webb started on the mound for the Giants and faced the minimum nine hitters over three scoreless innings of work. Webb allowed two singles, walked one and struck out one during his 24-pitch outing.

San Jose took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Brusa blasted a solo home run to deep right center, but the Nuts came back to tie the game against Giants reliever Carlos Sano in the top of the fourth. Luis Liberato greeted Sano with a solo home run to right center - his fifth homer of the season. Modesto then took the lead with another run against Sano in the fifth. Bryson Brigman led off by drawing a walk before a one-out single from Anthony Jimenez put runners on first and second. Garret Kennedy followed with a line drive single to right plating Brigman for a 2-1 Nuts advantage.

The Giants though answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead. Brusa led off with a single before Winn stepped to the plate and launched an opposite-field two-run homer to right. The home run, Winn's sixth of the year, put San Jose in front by a 3-2 margin. The Giants added a third run in the inning when Bryce Johnson doubled with two outs before Tomlinson delivered an RBI single to make it 4-2.

The lead, however, was short-lived as Modesto produced their own three-run rally in the top of the sixth. With Sano still on the mound, Donnie Walton reached on a fielding error committed by Brusa at first base to start the inning. Kyle Lewis then smacked an RBI double off the fence in deep left center. Joe Rizzo was up next and he lofted a fly ball double down the left field line to easily score Lewis tying the game 4-4. Brigman then delivered the third straight RBI hit as he singled home Rizzo putting the Nuts back in the lead at 5-4.

Modesto pushed across another run in the top of the seventh as Kennedy was hit by a pitch to start the inning, moved to second on a walk to Gareth Morgan, advanced to third on a Liberato sacrifice bunt and scored when Walton grounded out.

Down 6-4, the Giants rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Frandy De La Rosa was hit by a pitch with one out before Johnson drew a two-out walk. Tomlinson followed with a line drive single to right plating De La Rosa to bring San Jose back within a run. Johnson, the potential tying run, advanced to third on the RBI hit, but was stranded there when Jalen Miller struck out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brusa singled with two outs, but Winn struck out as the score remained at 6-5. In the ninth, Johnson reached on a two-out error to again put the tying run on base, however Tomlinson struck out looking to end the game.

Nuts starter Ljay Newsome (4-3) earned the win after tossing six innings with four runs (all earned) on six hits allowed. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. Seth Elledge pitched the bottom of the ninth for his seventh save of the year.

Sano (0-1) was charged with five runs (four earned) in his three innings of relief to take the loss.
