Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE, Ky - After a late home run tied the game in the eighth inning for the Gateway Grizzlies, the Florence Freedom saw Keivan Berges deliever their first walk-off homer of 2018 in the ninth, pushing Florence ahead for good, 3-2, in the weekend finale at UC Health Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After Cody Gray (5-4), kept the score, 2-2, in the top of the ninth inning, Berges stepped to the plate to begin the home half of the frame. On the second pitch from Gateway (36-54) reliever Grant Black (1-4), the All-Star outfielder smashed a liner that slammed off the second row of signage in left field, securing the series sweep over the Grizzlies with a, 3-2 victory.

Gateway starter Alec Kisena faced the minimum through his first four innings, but the Freedom ended his bid with perfect history in the fifth. Leading off the frame, Skyler Ewing launched his 16th home run of the season to give the Freedom an early one-run lead. Berges followed the blast with a double, and came around to score one-batter later when Jordan Brower laced a single to right-center, doubling the Florence lead to two.

Tyler Gibson was phenomenal on the mound for Florence. The righty worked around some early trouble, utilizing two double plays to face only one batter over the minimum through his first 5.2 innings. In the eighth inning, Gibson allowed a single to Mitch Piatnik to begin the frame, and after generating a pop-out off the bat of Shane Mardirosian, the starter was replaced by reliever, Ryan Colegate. On the first pitch of Colegate's outing, Trae Santos lifted a long fly-ball off the scoreboard, tying the game, 2-2. With the homer, Gibson was forced to swallow the no-decision. The right-hander finished with a final line of 7.1 one-run innings, scattering five hits to go-along with three walks and a strikeout.

The Freedom now set their sights on the final home series of the regular season, with three games against the Normal Cornbelters awaiting to begin with a twin-bill on Wednesday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:05 PM at UC Health Stadium.

The Florence Freedom are members of the Independent Frontier League and play all home games at UC Health Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, KY. The Freedom can be found online at florencefreedom.com, or by phone at (859) 594-4487.
