Energy Drop Home Contest to Stars Despite Jarell Martin's Monster Game
February 23, 2017 - NBA G League (G League)
Iowa Wolves News Release
Des Moines, Iowa- The Iowa Energy (9-27) fell short Thursday evening, dropping a 120-110 contest to Salt Lake City (12-22) despite a monstrous performance from Grizzlies assignee Jarell Martin, who posted 22 points, 26 rebounds and four steals in the loss.
The performance was the first 20-20 game of the season for the Energy and the first for Martin in his D-League career.
Martin was two rebounds shy of tying the Iowa Energy's single-game rebounding record, which was set by Earl Barron against the Erie Bayhawks on March 5, 2010.
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first quarter, the Energy used a 22-14 run to end the quarter down 31-29. The two teams swapped leads eight times in the second as the Stars held on to a one-point lead at half.
Salt Lake City outscored Iowa 29-19 in the third quarter to push their lead to 85-74 heading into the final frame. The Energy fought their way back to a six-point deficit, trailing 114-108 with 29.6 seconds remaining in the game, but it was too little too late for Iowa.
Wayne Selden Jr. scored a game-high 31 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor. Tonight's performance was Selden Jr.'s highest point total of the season despite shooting only 2-of-6 from three.
Quinton Chievous and Troy Williams each chipped in 12 points for Iowa. Chievous was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and added three points from the charity stripe.
Iowa outrebounded Salt Lake City 60-48 on the glass and held a 25-19 edge in second chance points. The Energy also outscored their opponent (19-15) in fast break points and points in the paint (48-44).
Utah Jazz assignee Joel Bolomboy led the Stars with 25 points and 12 rebounds on 8-13 shooting from the floor. Iowa native Marcus Paige finished with 13 points while shooting 5-of-11 from the field.
The Iowa Energy continue their two-game game stand tomorrow night against the Long Island Nets at 7:00 p.m.
