Texas Copperheads News Release
Each week txcopperheads.com talks with Head Coach Ollie Guidry about everything Copperheads. If you have a question for Coach Guidry, email it to cronquillo@texascopperheads.com. Next week, Coach Guidry might answer your question!
This week Coach discusses the week 12 loss at Bossier-Shreveport and the 6/21/08 home contest against the Corpus Christi Sharks.
On the 6/14/08 loss to Bossier-Shreveport: I was disappointed in the way we performed in that game. Coming off a high the previous week against Rio Grande Valley, I thought we had some momentum. We didn't play particularly well in all three phases of the game. We didn't finish the football game the way we'd expect to finish. We didn't execute well in the 3rd and 4th quarter.
On QB Rudy Carlton's performance against Bossier-Shreveport: There's no question...it was an off day. He was disappointed in himself and his performance. Coming in to the game I know he felt pretty good. I know he had a lot of high expectations from last week's performance. Unfortunately it just didn't happen. It was more mechanics than anything else. We expect him to play better this week.
On defensive breakdowns at Bossier-Shreveport: We had a few mental mistakes on defense. It was unfortunate. Compound that with the offensive mistakes and it doesn't make for a good first half. We tried to make some corrections at half time. We made some adjustments and kind of crept back in the game but unfortunately we just couldn't pull it off.
On why DB/WR Armar Watson left the Bossier-Shreveport game in the 1st quarter and did not return: He had a groin injury. It happened on special teams. We expect him to be ready to go this week. With him being out of the game...whether its offense or defense, that's a lot of production that you are taking out...and offensively you're talking about some points.
On the Copperheads' crisp and intense Tuesday night practice (6/17/08): The key to trying to be successful is trying to do everything right and trying to make sure you work hard. You come out and compete in practice. You want to have a good practice. You don't want to make any mistakes. Some of the mistakes we made on Saturday night we hope to eliminate this week in practice. We want to make sure we get things correct. We will be ready to play this weekend. We will play hard this weekend.
On week 13 opponent Corpus Christi: Corpus is a sound team. They have a solid QB. They have some guys at the skill positions that are going out there and making plays. What's really strong about those guys is their defensive line. I've been impressed over the last couple of weeks at the way they have been performing. They've been putting a lot of pressure on the QB. Coach Trigg will have those guys ready. They are one game out of first place so they are going to be trying to get back into that situation when they face us this weekend.
On Corpus Christi's Ivory McCann: We talk about us making plays but there are other teams out there and their players are making plays as well. Hopefully we can match that. We're going to match their energy this weekend. He's a good football player.
On pressuring Corpus Christi QB Fran Johnson: We have to go full speed on every single play and we have to give complete effort on every single play. Hopefully we can create some match ups this weekend that will allow us to put pressure on the QB.
On what the Copperheads need to do against Corpus Christ to be successful: We need to come out and play our game. We have to play for 60 minutes. We have to execute. We have to play smart football. We have to play faster than last week. We have to execute on every play. If we do that we are going to have a great opportunity. It was a very competitive game when we played them three or four weeks ago. We're looking forward to the challenge.
