COBRAS LAST WEEK (4/17): The Carolina Cobras' defense stymied the Philadelphia Soul on a rushing attempt on the final play of the game to preserve a 63-59 victory at the Charlotte Coliseum. In his first start behind center this season, Rickey Foggie sparked the Cobras offense to its highest scoring output since the season opener, completing 22-of-31 passes for 338 yards and five touchdowns. Carolina scored on each of their first eight possessions of the game as Damien Groce paced the Cobras' revived offensive attack, pulling in eight receptions for a career-high 173 yards and three touchdowns, while first-year wide receiver/linebacker D.J. Humphries caught eight passes for 90 yards and a score. Reece added three rushing touchdowns on the night.

DESTROYERS LAST WEEK: The Columbus Destroyers jumped out to an early 12-point lead, however, the Tampa Bay Storm went on to score 21 unanswered points midway through the game to secure a 46-36 victory in front of 15,108 fans at Nationwide Arena. The game's momentum swung on the Destroyers' first possession of the second half, when quarterback Ryan Vena was picked off by Storm lineman Kelvin Kinney for a touchdown. The score put Tampa up by ten, a lead which they would never relinquish. Vena led the Destroyers in passing and rushing, completing 16-of28 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball five times for 27 yards and one touchdown. Offensive specialist Sedrick Robinson led Columbus in receiving, catching six balls for 69 yards taking two of them the distance for scores.

Prior to joining the Destroyers, Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the Albany Conquest to a regular season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. Selesky also spent the 2001 season on the sidelines for the af2 Louisville Fire, leading the team to a 6-10 mark. He also serves as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm from 1997 to 1999. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.

Head Coach and General Manager Earle Bruce leads the Columbus Destroyers in their first season following the franchise's relocation from Buffalo. Bruce (16-23) formerly served as the head coach for the Cleveland Thunderbolts (1994) and the St. Louis Stampede (1995-96). He is widely recognized as the former leader of the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he succeeded long-time coach Woody Hayes in 1979 and compiled a 81-26-1 record over the next nine years. He led the Buckeyes to two outright Big Ten titles and two co-championships, while being named as the 1980 Big Ten Coach of the Year. The Ohio native has also served as head coach at the University of Tampa, Northern Iowa and Colorado State.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
OS Damien Groce: Groce has emerged as a dangerous weapon as a receiver, rusher and kick returner this season. In 11 games, he has 55 catches for 663 yards and a career-high 17 touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the Cobras come-from-behind win at Columbus (2/13). Groce had a career performance in his first start at offensive specialist against Philadelphia, setting career highs with eight receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

WR/DB Jarrick Hillery: The fifth-year veteran is one of the most versatile two-way players in the AFL. This season, he has made contributions on offense, defense and special teams in 2004, earning AFL Ironman of the Week honors following the Cobras victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (3/21). Thus far, he ranks among the team leaders with 23 receptions (5th), 238 receiving yards (5th), 18.9 kickoff return average (1st) and 26.5 tackles (1st).

FB/LB Travis Reece: The AFL's leading rusher in 2001, Reece has been a physical force for the Cobras on both sides of the ball in 2004. Through 11 contests, he leads Carolina with 69 yards and seven touchdowns on 30 rush attempts. On defense, he has flourished at the ‘Mac' linebacker position, posting 17.5 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. He teams with Chris Pope for one of the most formidable FB/LB duos in the league.

DS Daryon Brutley: The former Northern Iowa standout has become the leader of the Cobras defensive backfield following the injury to DS Glenn Davis and the release of DS Damon Mason. Named as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game in Carolina's victory over Philadelphia (4/17), Brutley ranks seventh on the team with 17.0 tackles in just seven games of action.

SOUL PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Ryan Vena: The first-year signal-caller has flourished after taking the reigns for the Destroyers early in 2004. A threat on the ground and through the air, Vena has passed for 1,968 yards and 32 touchdowns, while also ranking among the league leaders with 130 yards (8th) and eight touchdowns (T-7th) rushing.

WR/LD Sedrick Robinson: Robinson has emerged as a viable Ironman of the Year candidate in 2004, proving to be a force on offense, defense and special teams. He currently ranks third on the team with 44 receptions and stand second with 560 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Robinson has also become one of the most dangerous kick returners in the league, averaging 21.1 yards per return. The veteran two-way player has also added 13.0 tackles on defense.

DS JoJo Polk: The former Grand Rapids standout has stepped up to become the leader of the Destroyers' defensive backfield. Thus far, he has accumulated a team-high 50.5 tackles and nine passes defended. In his second season with the franchise, Polk has added two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

SNAKE BITES:
Good Morning: After stumbling to 34.3 points per game over the team's previous three games, the Cobras posted 63 points in the victory over Philadelphia. The addition of QB Rickey Foggie and WR/LB D.J. Humphries and the move to OS by Damien Groce fueled a revived Carolina offense. In his first start of the season, Foggie posted a Cobras season-high 338 passing yards. Carolina notched touchdowns in all but one of 10 possessions in the game.

Change Is Good: The Cobras changes on the sidelines have resulted in a very unique stat. With the team's victory over Philadelphia, Carolina interim head coach Ron Selesky became the third coach to win his first game with the team in 2004, joining former head coaches Eddie Khayat and John Gregory. The club is 1-7 in the other eight games this season.

Glimmer of Hope: The Cobras hope to reach the 2004 postseason is aided by the fact that they face a mush easier road than the teams they are battling with for one of eight playoff berths. Along with Columbus, Carolina holds the easiest schedule in the league in the final five weeks of the season.

Rk Team Opp. Record Win Pct.

8 Dallas (6-5) 27-29 .482

14 Carolina (4-7) 19-37 .339

Ewww...Groce: Cobras OS Damien Groce has emerged as a dangerous triple-threat, proving to be a playmaker on offense, defense and special teams. En route to setting career highs for receptions (55) receiving yards (663) and touchdowns (17), Groce had a standout performance in his first start at OS in win over Philadelphia (8 rec., 173 yards, 3 TDs). The former New York Dragon also leads the team with 35 KO returns and 637 KO return yards and stands third on the squad with 21.0 tackles.

Chance To Shine: After losing Glenn Davis to injury and releasing Damon Mason, Carolina has turned to a number of new faces in the defensive backfield. First-year DS Daryon Brutley was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game in the Cobras win over Philadelphia after recording a team-high five tackles, while WR/DB Ernest Ross has seen extensive playing time as well, posting 10.0 tackles in four games. Second-year DS Henry Baker looks for his first action of the season along with newly-signed DS Fred Vinson, who was a second-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in the 1999 NFL Draft.

Injury Bug: The loss of the WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson to a neck injury is the latest a rash of long-term injuries suffered by the Cobras. Earlier this season, Carolina also lost OL/DL Kendrick Gholston (knee), OL/DL Wes Stephens (ankle) and DS Glenn Davis (shoulder) to season-ending injuries. Many of the team's nagging ailment have been aided by the bye week prior to their contest with Columbus.

Stepping Up: First-year WR/LB D.J. Humphries made the most of his first opportunity for extended playing time in 2004 against Philadelphia, reeling in eight passes for 90 yards and his first career touchdown reception. After only two career games, the South Carolina native has displayed skills that will be expected to be a big part of the Cobras offense following the loss of WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson and the departure of WR/LB Jack Walker Jr.

Nifty Fifty: The first team to 50 points very well could be the victor in this weekend's matchup. Throughout their five-year history, the Cobras have had very little success when they are unable to post 50 points or more. At the same time, they have been most successful when holding opponents under the half-century mark.

Scoring output 2004 Win Pct. All-time Win Pct.
Less than 50 pts 0-5 .000 3-38 .073

Third and Oh!: The Carolina defense continues to struggle to limit opponents' success on third down. Despite holding the Soul to 3-of-6 third down attempts, the Cobras rank 19th in the league – allowing opponents to convert 34-of-57 attempts (58.7 percent) on the season. Carolina has also been ineffective on offense, converting only 31-of-75 (41.3 percent) attempts.

In the Zone: The Cobras have been very efficient in the red-zone throughout the 2004 season, leading the league with a 95.7 percent conversion percentage. In 46 trips inside their opponents' 10-yard line, Carolina has scored 40 touchdowns and four field goals. The Cobras have been successful in 36 out of the club's last 37 red zone possessions.

He Roxz: OS Todd Doxzon has been the Cobras most productive receiver throughout the 2004 campaign and is on pace to shatter many of the franchise's single-season receiving records. Thus far, he is seventh in the league with 82 receptions and eighth with 946 yards. Currently, he is seven receptions and two receiving touchdowns shy of the single-season franchise records. Following is how he would stack up with the top pass catchers in Carolina's five-year history if he continues on his current pace.

Running on Empty: After posting 30 yards on seven carries (4.3 yds/carry) in the season opening victory over the Dallas Desperados, the Cobras have proceeded to record just 88 yards on 49 carries (1.9 yds/carry) over the next 10 games. Carolina currently ranks last in the AFL with 9.8 yards per game on the ground.

Pace Setters: The Cobras have a number of players on pace to set a variety of single-season records if they continue on their current pace. Following is a chart of where each player currently stands, the record and the record-holder.

Player Stat Cur. Rec. Holder
T. Doxzon Points 110 120 Holmes ‘03
Rec. 82 89 Holmes ‘03
Rec. Yards 946 1102 Bailey ‘02

R. Bironas FGM 11 15 George ‘03
FGA 32 42 George ‘03

Early Bird Gets the Worm: The first team to score this weekend is likely to hold a large advantage based on the Cobras' history. This season, Carolina is 4-2 when they get on the board first, but winless in five contests when the opponents notch the first points. A similar trend can be found throughout team history – (12-17 when scoring first; 8-32 when opponent scores first).

Heading In the Right Direction: Regardless of the recent struggles, this year's Cobras have seen a vast improvement over last season's squad in a number of key areas.

2004 2003
Scoring offense 48.1 34.6
Pass offense 240.9 204.8
TDs thrown 53 58
INT thrown 6 26
Turnover Margin +3 -23

On the Sidelines: Following the dismissal of Eddie Khayat and John Gregory, Ron Selesky was promoted to the interim head coach position, becoming the sixth head coach in Carolina history. It marked the fourth mid-season coaching change in five seasons.

Head Coach Season Record Win Pct.
Doug Kay 2000-01 10-18 .357

Queen-Sized Win: Carolina put an end to a grueling, AFL-record 16-game home losing streak on March 21 with a 54-43 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champions, the Tampa Bay Storm. The Cobras special teams accounted for three touchdowns, while the defense pressured the Storm throughout the game, posting two interceptions and nine passes defended.

Nothing But Iron-man: WR/DB Jarrick Hillery was recognized as the Army Ironman of the Week for his performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday, March 21. The four-year veteran recorded two kickoff returns for touchdowns, caught three passes for 39 yards and a score and added four solo tackles and an interception on defense.

Dragons Fly South: The Cobras roster features six former New York Dragons, including OS Todd Doxzon, OS Damien Groce, QB Matt Nagy, OL/DL Sean Tremblay and OL/DL Cory Stone. OL/DL Robert Stewart also appeared in 28 games with the Dragons in 2001 and 2002.

The Making of the Cobras: The Cobras have experienced a dramatic makeover following the disappointments of the 2003 season. Only two players from last year's squad will be on the field in the tenth week, OL/DL Robert Stewart and 2003 Team MVP WR/DB Bernard Holmes. Of the 21 remaining players on the active roster, 20 were signed as free agents.
