Lakewood Dodges Power Sweep in Extras

(Lakewood Township, NJ- May 27, 2015)- The West Virginia Power lost 7-6 in an extra inning walk-off against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Wednesday at FirstEnergy Park. A Joel Fisher single off Nick Neumann scored Herlis Rodriguez from third to help the BlueClaws avoid a sweep and snap the Power's five game winning streak.

Lakewood took a 2-0 lead in the second against West Virginia starter Colten Brewer. Gustavo Martinez and Grenny Cumana singled in Rodriguez and Fisher, respectively, to give the BlueClaws their first lead of the series.

The Power tied the game with two runs off Ranfi Casimiro in the top of the fourth inning. Jerrick Suiter singled home Jordan Luplow and Kawika Emsley-Pai reached on a single that scored Michael Suchy. Lakewood regained the lead with a run in the bottom of fourth on two hits.

West Virginia evened the score at three in the fifth inning when Elvis Escobar doubled in Tyler Filliben, but the BlueClaws went ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Carlos Tocci groundout. Lakewood extended their lead to 5-3 with a run in the sixth inning.

Luplow doubled in Elvis Escobar with one down in the seventh to cut the deficit down to one. Suchy followed Luplow with a home run to left off Austn Davis. Suchy's second home run of the season gave the Power their first lead of the game at 6-5.

Lakewood loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but could not push the winning across. In the bottom of the 11th, Rodriguez singled to right with one out and moved to third on a throwing error by Power reliever Neumann. Fisher singled down the third base line past a diving Luplow to drive in Rodriguez and give the BlueClaws their second walk-off win this season.

Colten Brewer pitched six innings, but did not factor in the decision. The right-hander allowed five runs on ten hits and was in line for the win after Suchy's home run. Julio Vivas allowed the game-tying run in the seventh and was charged with a blown save in his South Atlantic League debut. Neumann (1-1) took the loss for the Power while Joey DeNato (2-1) earned the win.

The Power travel to Salisbury, Maryland, to start a four game series on Thursday evening. Austin Coley takes the hill in the opener against John Means at 7:05 pm.
