Stingrays Weekly: Stingrays Take Winning Streak on Season-High Seven Game Road Trip

The South Carolina Stingrays extended their record winning streak to 21 contests, the second longest streak in North American professional hockey, with tilts against the Indy Fuel and Cincinnati Cyclones at the North Charleston Coliseum for a week record of 2-0-0-0 and improved their overall record to 39-18-1-6.

Friday marked the second-ever meeting between the Stingrays and Fuel with the Stingrays prevailing 4-0 and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis recorded his fourth consecutive shutout, an ECHL record, and extended his shutout streak to 319:32. Forward Brett Cameron recorded two goals and forward Patrick Gaul added two assists in the victory.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday against the Cyclones. Stingrays grabbed three one-goal leads, but the Cyclones fought back to tie each time until taking a 4-3 lead midway through the third period. With Jakaitis pulled and on the power play, forward Caleb Herbert buried the game-tying goal with 1:12 to play.

The Cyclones were awarded a power play in overtime, but the Stingrays successfully dissolved the 4-on-3 opportunity to force a shootout. Stingrays forward Joe Devin scored the in the first round of the breakaway contest, but the Cyclones made it 1-1 in the fourth round. Herbert provided the game-winning heroics in the bottom of the fifth round to reward the Stingrays with a 5-4 win. Forward Andrew Rowe netted a goal and two assists and forward Wayne Simpson acquired three assists. With the win, Jakaitis picked up his 13th consecutive victory, tying the ECHL record set by Roanoke's Daniel Berthiaume in 1994-95.

The Stingrays boast the best defense in the ECHL with a 2.31 goals-against average and the best shots shots-against average at 26.22.

Goaltenders Adam Morrison and Jeff Jakaitis hold the best goals-against averages in the ECHL with Morrison standing on top of the ECHL with a 1.88 GAA. Jakaitis sits second in the league with a 1.96 GAA. Morrison is also second among league netminders with a .928 save percentage and tied for second with four shutouts. Jakaitis is fourth with a .925 save percentage and leads the ECHL with six shutouts. Morrison is riding a seven-game winning streak while Jakaitis is on an ECHL-record 13 game winning streak.

Forward Derek DeBlois is tied for 17th among ECHL rookies with 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists).

Defenseman Marcus Perrier is first among ECHL rookies with 41 minor penalties and fifth with 11 major penalties. He also stands fourth among first-year players with 147 penalty minutes.

Forward Caleb Herbert boasts a shooting percentage of 22.0 (18 goals on 82 shots), ranking fourth over ECHL rookies.

Defenseman Lee Moffie is on a five-game assist streak with six assists. Team captain Andrew Rowe is riding a seven-game point streak with two goals and 11 assists for 13 points. Forward Brandon Wong sits on a four-game assist streak (four assists).
