Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (8-9-1-0) put their three game winning streak on the line against the Calgary Hitmen (10-8-0-1) and came out on the wrong end of a 5-3 score.

First Period Even with a flying start to the game, it took until the midway point of the frame to get the first goal. The Hitmen took advantage of their powerplay right off the faceoff as Pavel Karnaukhov gathered up a rebound and lifted it to the top corner of the Pats goal. Regina didn't waste any time getting it back as just a minute later, Adam Brooks pounced on an Austin Wagner rebound and slung it to the back of the net. The Pats stayed on the attack as Morgan Klimchuk and Patrick D'Amico ran a give and go into the Hitmen zone which set D'Amico for his team leading ninth of the season and a 2-1 lead. The Blue and White couldn't get to the intermission up a goal as the Calgary powerplay converted a second time. Connor Rankin took the puck at the side of the goal, faked moving across the net and sent a perfect backhand over the shoulder of Daniel Wapple to tie the game 2-2 through twenty minutes. Regina led the shot count 11-9 after the first.

Second Period It only took Calgary 31 seconds to regain the lead as Brooks inadvertently ran into Wapple while defending the rush and knocked his goaltender down. Connor Rankin took advantage as he gathered his own blocked shot and sent it to the back of the net over the downed goalie. The Pats had a pair of powerplay opportunities in the period, but couldn't capitalize on either. Patrick D'Amico came the closest as he fired a shot off the crossbar and the Hitmen carried the 3-2 lead into the final period. The Blue and White continued to hold sway over the shots with a 21-17 edge in that department.

Third Period With the Pats pressing for the tying goal, Braden Christoffer created a turnover with a hit at the Calgary blue line. Austin Wagner jumped on the puck and carried it across the slot before wiring a snapshot to the top shelf, equalizing the score 3-3. The Pats' comeback only lasted seconds as Micheal Zipp's point shot redirected in front and hit the back of the net, setting Calgary in front for good. Radel Fazleev completed the scoring with an empty net goal in the final minute for a 5-3 Hitmen victory. Once again, the Pats owned the shot lead after sixty minutes, with a 29-26 final mark.

The Pats are off this weekend, but return to action Wednesday in Prince Albert. Listen to the game on 620 CKRM with Home Depot Pats Hockey starting at 6:35 p.m.
