Mountaineers defeat Newport Gulls

Newport, RI - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Newport Gulls 8-3 in Friday night New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Cardines Field. With the win and Sanford Mainers loss to the North Adams SteepleCats, the Mountaineers now sit atop the Northern Division standings by two and a half games. Vermont has won its first two games of the six-game road swing.

Pitching was the story of the game once again, as starter Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley) improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season. Ashbeck had great stuff, dealing seven solid innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Robert Strader (Louisville) was strong in relief for the Mountaineers, pitching two scoreless innings. He gave up no runs on one hit. He struck out one.

Brett Hanewich (Stanford) took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the summer. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks over five innings of work. He struck out five.

With a 3-1 lead after five innings, the Mountaineers tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) led off with an infield single. Mike Krische (Canisius) struck out, but reached on a passed ball to set up first and second with no outs. Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) followed with an RBI single to score Amburgey from second and make it 4-1. The hit was Hall's second of the game. Trey West (Le Moyne) followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 5-1. Alex Caruso (St. John's) capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to left to score Hall from third and give Vermont a 6-1 edge.

With the score 6-3, the Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the ninth. Evan Harasta (UAlbany) walked to lead off the inning. Nick Solak (Louisville) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Harasta to second. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) followed with an RBI double to score Harasta. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) followed by ripping an RBI single to score Tiberi and give the Mountaineers an 8-3 cushion.

Caruso and Hall had two RBIs apiece. Tiberi led the team with a three-hit game, smacking two doubles and a single.

The Mountaineers return to action Saturday night, when they travel to New Bedford, Massachusetts to battle the Bay Sox. The opening pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
