Two-Out Runs Propel Cats to Win, Series Split against Bees

Sacramento River Cats News Release

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Sacramento's second-inning surge led to an early 4-0 lead and the River Cats never looked back on their way to a 9-6 win and series split with the Salt Lake Bees on Sunday night at Smith's Ballpark.

With one out in the second, Hiro Nakajima walked and then stole second on a swinging strikeout by Ryan Ortiz. Nakajima scored from second on a single by Tyler Ladendorf who was then doubled in by Shane Peterson. Third baseman Jose Martinez hit his first home run of the season on a 3-2 pitch, plating Peterson and giving Sacramento a 4-0 lead.

The Cats (2-2) would add five more runs-one in the third and four in the eighth- but it was the stellar pitching performance by right-handed starter Matt Buschmann that paved the way to victory. Buschmann (1-0, 4.76 ERA) earned a win in his River Cats debut, holding the Bees to three runs on seven hits, striking out six without issuing a walk in 5 2/3 innings of work. Lefty specialists Eric Berger and Joe Savery, and righties Fernando Rodriguez and Jeremy McBryde combined to pitch 3 1/3 innings, giving up three additional runs. Savery earned the save coming in to get the final out of the game, a strikeout of C.J. Cron.

The Bees (2-2) scored a run each in the second and third innings, and cut the Cats' lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning on second baseman Taylor Lindsey's first home run at the Triple-A level, a solo shot to right field. Salt Lake would add three runs in the bottom of the ninth including a solo shot off the bat of John Hester, but Sacramento's large lead was too much to overcome.

Sacramento's Martinez had a big night at the plate, finishing 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI while Ladendorf and Nakajima each went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Peterson has now hit safely in three-straight games after going 2-for-6 with three RBI, including a bases-clearing three-run double in the eighth inning. Clutch hitting was the theme of the night for the River Cats who scored all nine runs with two outs.

Hester went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a homer, and an RBI while Lindsey went 1-for-5 with a run, a long ball, and two RBI. Lefty starter Wade LeBlanc (0-1, 11.25 ERA) received the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits over four innings.

The River Cats head to Las Vegas to take on the 51s for their second-straight road series to start the season. Sacramento RHP Josh Lindblom (0-0, No ERA) will take on Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-0, No ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night at Cashman Field.

Sacramento kicks off its 2014 home slate on a Fireworks Friday when the Bees visit Raley Field on April 11 to open an eight-game River Cats homestand.
