New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats won by the score of 8-1 in front of 6,223 fans at sold out New Britain Stadium on Saturday Night.
The Cats got things going early in the first after 2B Eddie Rosario doubled and 3B Miguel Sano was walked by starter RHP Rob Gilliam. C Josmil Pinto added a double of his own, scoring Rosario and LF Nate Hanson hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Sano. An infield popup by RF Daniel Ortiz should have been the third out of the inning, but it was misplayed by the Harrisburg third baseman which allowed Pinto to score from second base, however, Ortiz was thrown out after trying to advance to second.
New Britain would add a run in the third when Hanson doubled up the middle, scoring Pinto who was hit by a pitch. Hanson would advance to third after a throwing error by 2B Jose Lozada.
Rock Cats starter RHP Tom Stuifbergen looked very sharp in his home debut. He went six innings, giving up four hits, walking none and striking out seven to secure his first win in Double-A this season. His shutout bid was erased after RF Steven Souza, Jr. hit a solo shot over the left-center wall with two outs in the top of the fourth.
The Cats made it 5-1 when 1B Reynaldo Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, his seventh of the season.
New Britain was threatening again in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back walks were issued to Sano and Pinto with no outs. However, after a Hanson strikeout and Harrisburg pitching change, Ortiz flew out to left and Rodriguez struck out to leave the two runners stranded.
The bottom of the seventh saw the same scenario for the Rock Cats, but a very different outcome. After back-to-back walks were issued to Sano and Pinto, this time with one out, the leftfielder Hanson crushed a 3-1 offering over the fence, making it an 8-1 lead and that would be the final score for the night. The home run gave Hanson five RBI's on the night, a season-high for the Minnesota native.
The Rock Cats will wrap up their series with Harrisburg Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. RHP D.J. Baxendale will go for New Britain and he will face off against RHP Blake Treinen.
