BINGHAMTON, NY - Logan Verrett threw seven strong innings on the mound, and the offense provided 13 hits behind him as the Binghamton Mets beat the Bowie Baysox, 7-3 Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Verrett earned his league-leading eighth victory on the mound, and Allan Dykstra went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the offense.
For the second consecutive night Bowie got ahead of Binghamton in the top of the first inning. Caleb Joseph hit a double down the left field line against Verrett to put Bowie up 1-0.
Binghamton responded immediately in the bottom of the first against Bowie starter Jake Pettit. Danny Muno led off with a double into the left-centerfield gap. Josh Rodriguez knocked a single to put runners on the corners, and Dykstra tied the game with an RBI single.
In the third, Dykstra stuck again with a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right field. It was his second consecutive game with a homer, and it gave the B-Mets a 3-1 lead.
Wilfredo Tovar led off the fourth inning with a double off the left field wall. Muno followed with a walk, and Travis Taijeron hooked a home run over the left field wall to give Binghamton a 6-1 lead.
On the mound, Verrett was locked in after allowing the run in the first. He allowed two base hits over the next five innings, and entered the seventh inning with a five run advantage. With one out in the seventh, Garabez Rosa hit a liner to left field that got past a diving Darrell Ceciliani. It rolled to wall as Rosa made it to third with a triple.
Steven Bumbry brought him home with an RBI groundout to make it a 6-2 game, and Josh Horton followed with a solo home run over the right field wall for the third run against Verrett. He handed things over to the bullpen after allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings.
Scott Atchison tossed a scoreless eighth inning in his third game as a Major League rehabber. In the bottom of the eighth, the B-Mets scored their final run of the game when Richard Lucas singled in Taijeron to give Binghamton a 7-3 lead.
Jeff Walters entered in the ninth inning in a non-save situation, and worked around a one-out double to seal the victory. Verrett (8-2) is now the only player in the Eastern League with eight wins on the mound. Pettit (3-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.
The win sets up a rubber match between the B-Mets (41-26) and Baysox (31-33) on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM as LHP Mark Cohoon takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Devin Jones. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
