Hickory Crawdads News Release
Greenville, SC - A day after the Crawdads pitching staff struggled while dropping both games of a doubleheader, Hickory starting pitcher Luis Parra righted the ship with a solid outing and led the 'Dads to a 5-1 win over the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field.
Making his 5th start of the year, the southpaw-starting pitcher got in trouble early as the Drive loaded the bases in the first inning with nobody out. Parra rose to the occasion however, retiring the next three batters to escape the jam unscathed. Luis would go on to retire 8 in a row and 13 of 15 while tossing 5 shutout innings.
The 'Dads offense backed their starter with a pair of early runs, with Nick Williams driving in Joey Gallo with an RBI single in the first and David Lyon picking up an RBI triple in the second to give Hickory a 2-0 lead.
The advantage swelled to 4-0 in the fourth, when Nomar Mazara and Lewis Brinson hit back-to-back solo home runs. The two blasts pushed the Crawdads season home run total to 90, the most in all of Minor League Baseball.
Hickory would tack on one final run when Williams brought in Gallo again with an RBI sacrifice fly to make the score 5-0 in the seventh. The 'Dads lost the shutout in the ninth, when Drive center fielder Cody Koback hit an RBI triple. The 'Dads would eventually call upon All-Star reliever Alexander Claudio to close out the game, with the lefty stranding runners at the corners to preserve the 5-1 Crawdads win.
Brinson led the 'Dads offense with a 2-4 night including his 12th long ball of the year. Mazara finished the night 1-3 with his solo bomb and a walk, while Gallo went 2-5 with a double, triple and two runs scored.
Parra (1-1) earned the win for his solid outing while Greenville starter Luis Diaz (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on 9 hits over 5.2 innings. Claudio (10) picked up the save after finishing off the ninth inning.
The win pushes the Crawdads (34-27) back into first place in the SAL Northern Division, a half game ahead of Hagerstown and one game up on West Virginia. Greenville drops to 19-40 with the loss.
The 'Dads will go for the 4-game split against the Drive Sunday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 pm.
