LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville (29-32) had trouble avoiding the big inning against Norfolk (36-25) Thursday night. The Tides scored eight of their nine runs in two innings, putting up four runs in both the third and seventh frames. Despite a 4-for-4 night for Emmanuel Burriss, Louisville fell by a score of 9-3.

Norfolk batted around in the third and seventh innings, getting nine of their 13 hits while doing so. In the seventh, all three of the Tides hits were doubles. Louisville hit four doubles of their own, but only two led to runs.

Making his fifth rehab start with Norfolk, Tsuyoshi Wada (W, 1-3) gave up three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. He also struck out six batters while walking one. Daniel Corcino (L, 2-9) threw 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits for the Bats. Corky Miller made his second appearance on the mound, throwing two perfect innings of relief.

In the second inning, Denis Phipps hit a one-hopper off the wall in left field for Louisville's first hit, a double. Burriss followed that with a high bouncer that found its way over the third baseman's head. Phipps came home to score on the Burriss double.

Corcino ran into some trouble in the top of the third as he faced the Norfolk lineup for the second time. The Louisville starter retired Luis Exposito before surrendering three straight hits to the Tides. Travis Ishikawa hit a ground rule double to give Norfolk a 2-1 lead. Ishikawa scored on a Zelous Wheeler two-out double. Back-to-back two-out singles brought Wheeler home to cap off the four-run third inning for Norfolk. Corcino got Trayvon Robinson to pop out to end the inning.

Last night, Corky Miller contributed to Louisville's comeback in the ninth inning with a solo home run. He came up to bat in the fourth inning tonight with Burriss in scoring position. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Miller poked a ball into left field scoring Burriss and cutting Norfolk's lead to 4-2.

Corcino was able to avoid another big inning in the fourth, working around a hit and a walk to keep the Tides off the board. He once again allowed two base runners in the fifth. On his 105th pitch of the night, Corcino gave up a two-out RBI single to Exposito. Jose Arredondo, coming off a suspension, made his first appearance with the Bats since May 18. Arredondo struck out Jason Pridie to end the threat. After five innings, the Tides led 5-2.

Neftali Soto led off the sixth with a stand-up double. Wada's day ended with one out in the sixth and Soto on second. Wada allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six. Chris Jones relieved Wada and allowed a single to Burriss to put runners on the corners with one out. Louisville would only get one run in the inning, off a sacrifice fly from Nevin Ashley, to make it 5-3.

Arredondo retired four straight batters before Wheeler lined a double to center in the seventh inning. Russ Canzler, who replaced an injured Robinson in the third, doubled to right-center field to bring home Wheeler and extend the lead back to three. Kevin Whelan took over the pitching duties from Arredondo with one out and the bases loaded. The Tides leader in doubles, Pridie, added to his total with the bases full to score two more for Norfolk. The Tides would get one more run in the seventh on a wild pitch. After four runs on three hits and three walks, Norfolk found themselves in front, 9-3.

With a depleted bullpen, the Bats once again turned to Miller to take the mound. Miller used a mixture of Knuckleballs and 65-mile-per-hour fastballs to pitch perfect eighth and ninth innings. The catcher has thrown 2.2 innings this season, allowing just one hit and no runs.

Game four is slated for 7:05 tomorrow night. RHP Yohan Pino (1-3, 2.33) will face Norfolk's RHP Josh Stinson (3-2, 4.99) to see if the Bats lose or split the series. Along with fireworks after the game, tomorrow is also the 8th annual Southern Indiana Night at Louisville Slugger Field.
