Dominant Pitching Carries Smokies to 2-0 Win over Stars

KODAK, Tenn. - A trio of Smokies pitchers combined to allow just six hits as Tennessee blanked the Huntsville Stars, 2-0, on Thursday night in front of 2,824 at Smokies Park. The win puts the Smokies at 24-21 on the season and 3.5 games out of first place in the Southern League North Division.

Arismendy Alcantara led the offensive charge for the Smokies, going 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks.

Huntsville starter Jimmy Nelson (5-3) carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Alcantara hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Smokies a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Rafael Lopez singled and moved to second when Ty Wright was hit by a pitch. Tim Torres drove home Lopez with a double to increase Tennessee's lead to 2-0.

Tennessee's Kyle Hendricks (4-2) continued to give the Smokies quality outings. The righty went seven innings, giving up three hits, one walk and struck out seven. With his scoreless outing, Hendricks lowered his season ERA to 2.44 and 0.34 ERA in his four starts at Smokies Park.

Relievers Brian Schlitter and Marcus Hatley combined to throw the final two innings, giving up three hits and striking out one. Hatley earned his second save of the season.

The two teams will continue their five-game series Friday night at 7:15 at Smokies Park. The newest addition RHP Yeiper Castillo (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Smokies and the Stars will counter with RHP Ariel Pena (3-3, 2.95). It's Star Wars Night at Smokies Park and prior to the fireworks show, the Smokies will hold a special postgame tennis ball toss, with proceeds to benefit the relief efforts of the Oklahoma tornado victims.
