Jackson Generals News Release
MONTGOMERY, ALA - (May 23, 2013) A combined three-hitter by the Jackson Generals (20-24) pitching staff held the Montgomery Biscuits (22-24) at bay, as Jackson was propelled by a Brad Miller two-run homer to win 3-1. The Generals backed 22-year old starter Anthony Fernandez (W, 2-0, 6.66) who dealt his best start on Thursday night.
A low scoring affair got started off quickly in the first of the five game series. James Jones (1-4, 2 R, BB) hit his team-leading fifth triple of the year to lead the game off and then came around to score on a wild pitch. The lead did not last long for the Generals though, as Fernandez gave up his only run in the bottom half of the inning.
Both pitchers settled in after shaky first innings, but Miller (2-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB) made some noise during the calm third inning. His sixth homerun and thirteenth multi-hit game put the lead out of reach for the Biscuits, as Jackson's pitching was lights out the rest of the way.
Fernandez went six innings, allowing only one run on three hits. He only threw 67 pitches, but turned it over to the bullpen to finish it out. The pen picked up where their starter left off. Stephen Kohlscheen and Carson Smith threw a combined three scoreless innings. Kohlscheen did not even allow contact in the eighth, as he struck out the side. Smith got two groundouts and a strikeout in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
Matt Buschmann (L, 5-3, 3.18) only made one mistake, but Miller and the Generals made him pay. Buschmann finished with nine strikeouts through five innings, but the three runs he surrendered on six hits earned him the loss.
Game two of the series gets underway tomorrow at 7:05 CST. Jackson plans to start Roenis Elias (2-3, 2.90), as the Biscuits will counter with Jacob Thompson (2-5, 7.09). The game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN Radio, TuneIn Radio App. And jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
