Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA - After winning the first three games of the series, the Nuts were unable to complete a four-game sweep of the Storm as they dropped a 4-3 contest on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.
With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, the Storm pulled away with a three-run inning against Nuts starter Chris Jensen. Modesto chipped away with a pair of RBI's from Harold Riggins, but couldn't complete the rally against the Lake Elsinore bullpen.
Jensen (1-4), who was charged for four runs (three earned) on eight hits in the contest, took the loss.
Lake Elsinore starter James Needy (1-1) picked up his first win of the season after limiting the Nuts to just two runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Modesto jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Needy in the bottom of the first as Tim Smalling and Brian Humphries opened the game with singles, and Taylor Featherston got Smalling home on a sac-fly to center-field.
The Nuts held a 1-0 lead until the Storm plated an unearned run against Jensen in the fourth as Duanel Jones singled home Jace Peterson with two outs in the inning. Jensen ran into trouble in the fifth giving up five hits, including an RBI single to Peterson and a 2-run double to Jones.
Needy would hold Modesto without another run until Harold Riggins hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 4-2 score.
Riggins delivered a 2-out RBI single against reliever Cody Hebner in the eighth to cut Modesto's deficit down to one, but closer Johnny Barbato retired the last four hitters in a row to notch his fifth save of the season.
Modesto (19-23) will continue at home to host Visalia in a three-game series starting on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. RHP Ben Alsup (3-3, 4.17) will get the start for the Nuts opposite Rawhide RHP Kyle Schepel (1-1, 4.09).
