Lexington Legends News Release
(CHARLESTON, W. Va.) Lexington starter Aroni Nina recorded his first victory of the season as the Legends held off the West Virginia Power 6-4 to gain a split of a doubleheader Saturday night.
In the first of the two seven-inning games, the Power erased an early two-run deficit and went on to a 3-2 victory.
Fred Ford's first-inning homer with a man on gave the Legends an early two-run lead in game one, but Ford's homer was the Legends' only hit of the game. Stetson Allie put the Power on the board with a leadoff homer in the second inning.
West Virginia took the lead with two runs in the fifth. Eric Wood led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wyatt Mathisen, and to third on a single by Raul Fortunato. Walker Gourley grounded into a force play at second, scoring Wood with the tying run, and when shortstop Raul Mondesi's throw to first was wide, Gourley advanced to second. Junior Sosa's single scored Gourley with the go-ahead run.
Pat Ludwig (3-0), who relieved starter Tyler Glasnow in the fifth inning, pitched three scoreless innings and picked up the win. Legends starter Daniel Stumpf (3-1) pitched all six innings and took his first loss of the year. He allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked one batter and struck out six.
In the second game, the Legends scored two runs in the third inning. A single by Nic Cuckovich, a double by Yowill Espinal and a single by Alex Marquez produced one run, and Terrence Gore's bunt brought home Espinal from third, giving the Legends a 2-0 lead.
Lexington added a run in the fourth when Adrian Morales was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground out, stole third base and scored on Ethan Chapman's single.
After the Power answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Legends added to their lead with three runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Marquez and Gore walked. Mondesi singled, scoring Marquez and sending Gore to third. Mondesi stole second, and when catcher Francisco Diaz' throw went into center field, Gore scored. Ford's single scored Mondesi, and the Legends had a 6-2 lead.
West Virginia came back with two runs in the sixth inning against reliever Mark Peterson. With one out Gourley singled and Jonathan Schwind walked. Diaz doubled home a run, and Ashley Ponce's sacrifice fly scored another. But Peterson ended the threat by getting Sosa on a called third strike, and he struck out the side in order in the seventh inning.
Nina (1-2) worked five innings, allowed four hits and two earned runs in getting his first victory. He walked one batter and struck out two. West Virginia starter John Kuchno (1-3) also went five innings and took the loss.
The Legends are 21-21 for the season, in sixth place but just three and one-half games behind first-place Charleston in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.
West Virginia has won two of the first three games of the series, which concludes Sunday. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
